If it is popping out, and your shift linkage is installed correctly, it is probably something bad internal of the transmission.

Will it engage into 5th, and then only pop out if you smash on the gas or what?

I agree. If linkage is installed right then you have another problem on your hands. I would say that your tranny make be fu..ked but dont quote me on it. Good Luck

well im pretty sure that my shift linkage is hooked up right i mean it only really goes one way.

and it just seems like it will pop out anytime just when im cruisin, seems like it will do it more when im going faster but not accelerating. and it is also makin like a rattle noise or something weird up to like 55 but after that it stops.

could it have anything to do with it having a short throw shifter on it. it feels like it doesnt have enough throw to put it all the way into the gear.

If it's not the linkage then it's a synchro going out. Try running synchomesh fluid in it before you pull it out. It might hide the problem for a while and it's about $15 buck. Good luck
