typeR/gsR with stage 2 cams...need some help
The motor in a 98 gsr block(currently stock) with a itr head. The itr head has skunk2 stage 2 valve springs, retainers, and cams. Im running a p28 with a kenji chip(vtec 5800)
HERES MY PROBLEM
There are no cells being thrown and car seems to drive fine. When driving i feel a slight hesitation. when i hit vtec u can really feel it. Now when i timed the motor every thing lined up nicely, but when i threw the timing gun on the motor it was clearly off the marks. To get closer to the timing marks i moved the distributor as far as it would go and this still didnt put the marks dead on...now they are close but not right on. If the motor was off one tooth could it run seemingly smooth but when engaged in vtec really feel the hesitation?
if i am unclear in anyway or you just need more information just ask...TIA

sounds like tuning for me also. you might not be getting the right amount of fuel at your vtec crossover point. i run skunk2 st2 myself. when i first had them, it used to bog right when vtec kicks in(5700). i wanted to get my car tuned but i still wanted to buy a few more things before i spend all that money on tuning. so i just got it a/f tuned. and car is running alot better. no hesitation goes right thru vtec, no bogging. try it.

heres some more info...
my friend bought the complete ctr motor in a hatch and decided to sell it so i picked it up...he already had the cams and in the same head, only difference is that i now have a gsr block as opposed to his ctr block and his motor was smooth (i drove it)...do you guys still think its tunning...
oh yeah its has aem tru time gears which i set to zero before i timed it.
and the other thing that gets me is the distributor is completely advanced so it just seems like something involving the timing to me... IM GONNA TRY THAT TODAY

try that too. mine is somewhat in the middle- don't really know what my numbers are tho. so everything is the same except for the block?

set your mechanical timing, sounds like your off a tooth on the intake cam. Your compression is kind of low for those cams, 9.5, 9.6-1 with that type r head. Id reccomend some jdm itr pistons, new rings, and get it tuned, p28 with a "kenjii chip isnt gonna cut it
i realized that when i origianlly timed the car it was throwing the TPS cell...then i fixed that problem and forgot that i timed the car with the cell being throw.
I re-timed the car with the timing light(didnt mess with the belt) a few minutes ago and set it on the correct mark and now the distributor is in the middle and not completely advanced. I took it for a ride and was smooth as could be.NO hesitation what so ever.
THANKS for everyones advice i appreatiate it.
As for the compression yeah its kind of low but it still pulls much harder the then high compression b16b. But for now its decent i just swaped this in to take my b20's place(now that was low compression)..i was thinking about some jdm b16 p30 pistons and tunning in the near future...how are they compared to the jdm itr pistons or are they the same.
thanks agian
