Removing Alternator in 86-89 Accord
I have an '86 Accord 5-spd in which the alternator needs new brushes. The Honda shop manual tells you to pull the left driveshaft in order to remove the alternator! As I don't have a garage or any indoor place to work, is there any way to pull it from above?

If you are just replacing the brush pak, don't remove the ALT from the car or pull the drive shaft. just get the battery dis-connected remove the 10mm on the Batt lead and the insulator, swivel the alt. back then remove the 8mm nuts that hold the cover on; next get a GOOD #2 philips bit and there are 2 screws tht hold the brush pak in. When reinserting the new brush pak use a feeler gauge on top of the Alt rotor to help compress the brushes in to their holder.
Best of luck I hope this helps you

I just did this about an hour ago. If You remove the air filter box, you can get it out from above. You'll still need to go underneath to remove the mounting bolt and neg. wire.
On the DX and LX (carb) - you have the "snake" the alt along the firewall, then under/around the heater hoses to the heater core and remove it from the pass side of the car.
I've replaced several alt's on 3rd gen Accords in different trims and have never had to pull the cv shaft.

I have done this too. It is tight and you have to rotate it a few times to get it right, but it can be done!
