Default hmmm... a few questions about a 4gen accord...

Okay. Im 16, just about to get my license, have my permit, blah blah blah... I know a little about cars, I guess a good bit for my age, but just remember I dont know even near half as much as some of you older folks...

I have a 94 accord ex, 2dr, 2.2 vtec... the f22b1, (auto)
I already know it needs a tune up badly, but today I was driving with my mom and I noticed that the VTEC kicks in either way late or way early... its never smooth. Like I could be stopped at a stop sign or a red light, and as soon as I hit the gas the tach will jump up... Other times, I will need to pull out in a hurry, or get on the gas harder, and I will almost be flooring the pedal and the VTEC wont kick in until a few seconds later... The car feels really really weak then. This is where my question comes in. After I get the tune up, (and I know you might say "I would need to drive it or be there to tell") would there be anything else I could do to fix this, or would the tune up solve the whole VTEC problem?
any suggestions would be appreciated!

sounds like an oil problem to me...when your car is low on oil, vtec engagement can be erratic, or sometimes vtec won't engage at all...see if a simple oil change solves your problem...if not, then you will need to start checking out things like the vtec selenoid/pressure sender, etc...but i suspect it's merely a problem with not enough of the old 710...

I believe the f22b1's vtec doesn't just "kick" in, it actually depends on speed, throttle amount, and load of vehicle which isn't like most other series of engines.

I would still check your oil and a tune up wouldn't hurt (plugs, plug wires, air filter and oil change).

if the oil change fix doesn't help, you also might note that the 94 accords were the first USDM accords to receive VTEC, so it's not 100% efficient, especially since it's an automatic. you can try shifting through the gears (D1-D4) to help with power delivery. the early autos were known for "gear-hunting" since the transmission would often downshift too late as you push the accelerator or upshift too fast, so acceleration would slow to a crawl. i had a 1991 accord ex (non VTEC) and it had the same problems as you, so it's not exclusively the VTEC system itself. it's just the auto transmission.

the 94 accord ex is a 5th gen, not a 4th gen. just an fyi, not trying to be a smart *** or anything.

alright thanks everyone for the input... yeah after I typed that "4thgen" thing I realized it was fifth gen.

but yeah I probably like this time next year I will have that slushbox out and have a five speed in there. Hopefully. But for now Im just gonna get as much suspension as I can afford for it. Then put a few things in the motor, headers, throttle body, stuff like that.

Heres some advice that I seriously hope you take to heart. Don't dump all your money into. The suspension and I/E will make the car much more fun to drive, and the stereo is pretty much a must. But think about it, in 2 years time, your going (hopefully) off to college, and you'll need all the money you can get. Because you really don't want $20k of student loans that you won't be able to pay off until your 30. So, keep the auto transmission for now, and wait to do your swap, trans, turbo, or whatever, after you have a good job and no debt.

That is, if your like the most of us and don't have well off parents who give us everything. But if you are, I could really use a new radiator and some new brakes.

i second that. i hear so many young guys on here wanting to dump money into their rides and sooner or later have to sell it or part it out because the need money for school. can't do both.if you can, more power to you, but most of us can't. i am learning my self that this is an expensive and addictive hobby. and i have been out school since 2000. because of me wanting to do things to and for my car, i haven't paided off some credit bills that should have been gone by now. don't fall in that league. don't let the little dude perched on your shoulder direct you.

also just for clarification, know that your car is a 5th gen accord (1994-1997), and not a 4th gen accord (1990-1993).

i agree im also tired of people wanting to spend like 5gz in their car in suspension exhaust and all this other work and people dont notice that we in 2006 and instead of spending money into an older accord you can save up for school and the money u got left over save it so u can get a newer car! and plus with all the damn floods and natural disaster we are having it would b pointless dropping much money into a car if one of these days its going to get washed away or something will happen to it. i mean dont get me wrong like said
