Does Your Tranny Make This Noise?
I have this low volume grumbling/grinding noise from the tranny when I'm in neutral and with my foot off the clutch. The noise magnifies when I turn on the A/C. I have what I believe is the same exact noise when I'm coasting lets say in 5th gear with none of the pedals depressed. Both noises go away when I depress the clutch. Is a worn throwout bearing the problem?

I've had that sound for a while in my tranny.
Some people say it's the input shaft bearing. Some say it's the throw out bearing.
I've just had a tranny rebuild, and the sound still is there even with a new bearings/synchros. So I don't think the sound is a big deal as long as the tranny works ok.
Many people also get this noise when changing to a chromoly flywheel.

Yup...definitely the input shaft bearing(s).

DUDE I have a bran new tranny and it still makes that noise a bit. Don't worry about it at all. Its not worth the time and money to take off the tranny and fix. Plus like I said, been making that noise for 2 years now and its fine.

I did some more research through the archives and this sounds like an all too common problem. I guess the right question to ask is, who DOESN'T have this problem with their tranny?
I've never seen it firsthand with a B-series tranny, only D-series transmissions. In my experience, B-series transmissions are not that prone to failing input shaft bearings.
ive had this noise.
when clutch is not pressed, it makes a rattle noise. but when it is depressed, the noise is gone.
opened up the tranny yesterday to find the inputshaft bearing chewed up. (the ***** are supposed to be spaced apart)

is not the tranny itself.. its the clutch flywheel combo..... if you have an after market flywheel you will hear that noise alot more... by the way that noise is called ... "clutch chatter"

I thought "clutch chatter" occurred at the point where the friction disk makes contact with the flywheel. The chatter becomes more prominent as you use a more aggressive clutch.
I'm just going to replace all the bearings and go from there. They're relatively cheap anyways so why not get them all done while the tranny is out.

You are correct, clutch chatter is just when the clutch barely touches the flywheel, and sort of skips across the flywheel. Organic clutches won't cause this, but ceramic or kevlar ones will.
You may think the bearings are cheap, but, just doing all the main ball bearings, including the diff bearings, will run you 275-300. If you count all the little needle bearings that are between the shafts and the gears, look for that number to go up, there are a lot of them.
