Default heat smells bad on 99 honda civic dx

hi guys teacher at work would like to know why her heat smells like moldy ness.
well i suggested maybe her cabin air filter needs to be replaced, if she has one. then i looked and i didnt see one, maybe it was hidden behind the battery.
i also asked if she ever put any food on the dash board and possible something spilled in there. she said that was very doubtful.
i looked in the glovebox and i seen the ecu i believe it was and some other lil screws but i didnt pull all her stuff out and pull the glove box down cause i dont have tools over here and it is getting dark.
maybe someone could lead me in the right direction as to what is going on.
me and her would definatly appreciate any feedback.
by the looks of the owners manual she doesnt have an cabin air filter.....
let me know,
thanks
-mike

Mold has been knows to grow on the air condition evaporating coils. Lysol get's it off. However this is usually a summer problem. It is possible there is mold on the heater core. Not to likely though.

Another possibility is that there is a slight coolant leak in the heater core, coolant has a very interesting smell, kinda sweet almost.

Another possibility is that a small rodent crawled in somewhere and died. This is remote but it has happened.

Cheers, good luck, and welcome to Honda-Tech.

yea i was thinking possibly a rodent, cause i know it CAN happen.

i would just love to fix the problem instead of her going to the "STEALERSHIP" lol.

i only came on this site once before to ask about my cousins car and the guys here were very helpful.

i did fix the other problem with his red civic.

do you know if the car has a cabin air filter, and if it does do you know where it is located?

the car from the factory dosn't come with one unless she had one installed. if so it would be under the pax side dash. there is a trap door that opens up about midway of the glovbox. you don't need to take the glovebox down to do this.

best thing to do is to run the heat full blast and spray some oust or febreez or ozium would be the best thing into the intake side of the hvac system that located behind the glove box. just keep doing that till the smell goes away

My recommendation would be to make sure the product you use will kill mold. I know lysol does in most cases, not to sure about febreez or ozium.

im fairly crafty with the wrench, but this isnt my car and i dont know much about the hvac system obviously.

i barely ever use heat or ac in my car.

i dont think im going to tinker with her car only because if i break something im going to be liable. i think the best bet is for me to send her off to the mechanic and let them see what is really happening and hope they dont give it to her dry.

i sincerily appreciate the help honda guys.

if i need any more info ill hit this site back up, and if im not back then have a happy holiday.

hey could you like stick an air freshener in that intake, to have it smell better in your car?

i am a smoker and run the heater in the winter although i never smoke with my windows rolled up i can't stand standing smoke. is there a good product to get smoke smell out of the car, i know "air freshener" but i am talking about something that doesn't leave my car smelling fruity.

I found a aerosol product called "smoke relief" It works, barely smelt like anythign after you sprayed it, didn't fog up the windows, and got ride of the smoke smell.

But I quit and found that worked too

hope that helps
