Default Please diagnose my tranny problem!

Okay...heres the deal. I have a 97 Dx with the original 5 speed tranny. Al has ben fine and dandy up until a few weeks ago when I started noticing weird noises.
1. With the clutch pedal in (disengaged?) no noises whatsoever. Engine revs fine and all seems well.

2. When clutch is engaged (foot off the pedal) there is a very light whirring/grinding noise. Barely noticeable, but it was never there before.

3. When taking off in 1 st gear, the tranny seems to be making a kind of atick, tick, tick noise. Kinds of a grinding tick if you know what I mean.

4. When downshiting from 3 to 2 and 2 to first, and the revs are higher than 1500 or so, there is a harsh grinding sound.

Clutch seems to engage and hold just fine for how many miles are on it, and the gears do not grind while shifting.

Can anybody help me out? Do I need a new clutch.....new pilot bearing....new tranny?

Thanks a bunch.

I have the same exact problem with my tranny (98 civic ex). When on the down-rev in second and first gear there is a grinding noise. It is 99.9 percent the input shaft bearing, expect to be doing a rebuild soon.

sounds like an input shaft bearing, as well as a possible mainshaft bearing.

Yeah....that's exactly what it sounds like. Fluid levels are fine. I've been meaning to put in a new clutch, so I'll just plan on replacing all of the bearings as well as the clutch and flywheel.

Now...I just need to find out how to do it.

There's a writeup BauleyCivic did on here about replacing your input shaft bearing. It's really not too hard, you can't let the internals of the tranny intimidate you.

Clutch is a piece of cake also.

Sweet...I remember seeing that thread. Guess I need to get a Helms. Any idea on a good place to buy the bearings and a new somewhat performance oriented clutch? What kind of time frame to do all this?

Thanks guys.

Get the bearings from Honda. Either your local dealer or http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com or http://www.slhonda.com.

As far as a clutch goes, there are tons of places. Tons.

If you've never opened a tranny before or done any internal tranny work, give yourself a weekend. Start on a Friday night and give yourself the whole 2 days to work on it. Just in case. Better to be finished Saturday afternoon at 2 then to be stuck without a car Monday morning. Unless you have other transportation.

Good luck.

I'd buy the 5 main bearings - the 3 countershaft bearings, and the two mainshaft bearings. they are the bigger sealed bearings on each end of the shafts.

Also order a mainshaft seal, shifter shaft seal, and axle seals. You should also order up a rear main seal and buy a new clutch too since the tranny will be out.

Good luck!
