Can I use 5w-30 Motor oil in Tranny?
It might be a stupid question, but can I use 5w-30 motor oil in tranny? A friend of mine said that I could, not sure if he's right or not!
Correct, the fact that you "can" use 5W30 motor oil in your tranny doesn't mean you should. SJ and newer motor oils don't have the proper additive package for lubricating gears. They shear down to quickly. Besides, even when motor oil was specified, it was 10W30 for most Honda/Acura trannies.
Use Honda MTF, Red Line (MTL or MT-90) or perhaps one of the lighter Motul gear oils. I've heard talk of the new GM synchromesh fluid but know knothing about it. No matter what these oils cost ($5-10 per quart) it is CHEAP. You only need around 2 quarts and it easily lasts for two years or more.
