speedometer problem? my needle kinds toggles back and forth and odometer not working
hey guys.. i just picked up a 95 civic and the speedometer and the odometer sometimes doesn't work. the odometer doesn't change at all and the speedometer wiggles between 17 and 19 mph. the faster i go, the faster it wiggles until i get past 15 mph and then pegs itself at 19mph. if i hit a bump or drive a bit, the needle will go to zero and then to the right speed and the odometer starts working perfectly.
this usually happens when i first turn on the car, but usually starts working after i drive for about 10 mins.
any thoughts on what is wrong? i read somewhere that this car doesn't have a speedometer cable and it's an electric feed, so it just the sensor? if so, how much does this cost?

when i check the vss? (is that variable speed sensor) what do i check for? could it be loose, cleaned, or what? do i have to get the parts from honda dealer? why would it work sometimes and not other times?
any pics on how this looks?

VSS is the vehicle speed sensor not variable. I thought that it throws a cel when it screws up?

It's not your VSS.. It's the peice of **** cluster that Honda so generously gave us in our civics. Replace the cluster with a new cluster or GSR cluster or something and it will fix the problem. You might want to try swapping in a friends working cluster first just to be sure that is it the cluster though.

Are you kidding? The cluster is easy to remove.. Take out like 4 screws and it's basically out. There is one screw holding the bezel around the cluster on, and then 2 or 3 more screws holding the cluster in.
