Default Need help from real B16A pro!!!

I have a friend that has a usdm 89 SI Hatch with an 89-91 series JDM B16a from a Teg XSi/GSi...Cable tranny....The engine was pulled apart and put back together with:
Stock crank-polished/knife edged
Crower rods
JE 12:1 pistons
Mild port and polish
JUN Cams, gears, springs, retainers, oem valves
Skunk Intake manifold
Rc 310cc injectors
Stock B16A throttle body
Stock JDM SiR ECU
Apex VAFC
ACT clutch JUN flywheel...

He has been plagued with low 15's and clipped one 14.9 and has been very down and out about his car. Needless to say you can see he has a little $$$ invested and thinks he should be running high 13's-low 14's no problem...Now what I keep telling him is that having Cam gears and an Apex w/o DYNO tuning is about the SLOWEST thing you could do to yourself!!! I was hoping if he could see some other people agree with me, he would go DYNO and shut the hell up...Obviously there can be other reasons, but until he DYNO tunes it, I would blame the Cam gears and APEX.
All in FAVOR-----------"I"

Tell him to dyno it before he does anything else. He might be running lean right now which could cause him to be slow and could lead to his engine going boom. Or he could just be running really rich which would make him run slow.

I dont want to sound rude, but does, he have a good launch/know how to race pretty well, That could be part of it. Other then that, Take it to the dyno and get the motor running right. Maybe ask him if you could take it for a run and see what you can do with the car.

Post the time slip so you can tell how he drove.

What kind of cable tranny?

Never built an engine like that....but it just seems common sense that the first thing he should do is dyno tune it.

you also got to make sure of the basics like any engine codes, what is the fuel press., and what has he done with the VTEC-controller....does the car run smooth, run rich, fume a lot, etc......

He's so pissed he throws his slips away...2.2-2.3 60'times with high 9 second 1/8 mile and 14.9-15.2 1/4 mile...330 around 6.75 and the 1000' trap doesn't work at our track...I know he should dyno, but he's a stubborn bastard...He's now talking about dropping to 270 injectors and getting a bigger throttle plate...68mm or so. Told him to do nothing until he dynos...

Cable tranny from XSi Teg...YS1? No LSD

His 60' times are good...slicks should net him 2.0's...
What kind of WHP to expect? 200?
I know with this similar setup in my Lude, I would be slamming 200+...

Thanks everyone for trying to help save the life of a fellow VTEC'er...

Getting low 15's can be done with a stock ZC engine. Given that he spent probably 3-4 times the $ of a ZC it would be insane not to put the car on a dyno and start tuning it. What header/exhaust is he using?

Best of luck,

ctp

With 310cc injectors and no dyno tunning, he is running incredibly rich. I'll bet his gas mileage is about 200 miles on a tank (if that). Also, I'd put money on the fact that the spark plugs are probably black from carbon, since the motor is so rich.

He needs to get his *** on the dyno, and tune that puppy, then run some Regane through the motor to clean up some of the carbon that has built up from the excessively rich setup that he's been running.

That setup, if he's a semi competent driver, should get him mid to high 13's.

are you sure the motor is good? an old b16a can be a bad block. that's why i'm not touching mine before i put it in.

The motor was built by our mechanic...I'm sure the block was inspected before the build...He is going to get a different ECU, and then hit the dyno...I was also told that the JUN cams need 8000+rpms for real power....

The funny thing is his stock 89 Si motor with an intake and shifter netted several 15.9 second passes, and a $7000 engine build shaved 1 second so far...That's very sad
As soon as the weather improves we will find out what it's made of!!!

Thanks for everyones help!!!

dyno tune it for sure. well worth the money for a car like that. It will net him better gains than a new TB for sure.
