When it idles, its kinda rough and there's a poofing noise from the exhaust.... like it sounds like

brrrrrrrr -poof!- brrr -poof!- brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr -poof!- brrrrrrrrr and so forth.

It sounds like me after a big greasy cheesesteak. mmmm

Whats causing this? Is that a misfire? Are you psychic? I got a code 9 a little while ago (CYP cylinder position sensor). Lemme know.

Yeah good point. Its a 93 EG 1.5L non-VTEC, I've done a tune-up fairly recently (plugs, wires, rotor, cap, air filter, fuel filter, cleaned throttle), but not even the tune-up made a difference.

I was getting a code 9, but it only happens intermittently and never stays on. A little bit of white smoke on cold days from the exhaust, but I think probably just needs coolant flush.

Here's what I'm gona try to do:

1. Clean fuel injectors

2. New Rotor, maybe its corroded already

3. If not, New distributor

4. Try to clean out the intake again

5. Check for vacuum leaks

6. Adjust valves


Since I'm lazy, any suggestions as to what the problem is and what I could avoid doing would be a big help. Thanks

When's the last time you had a valve adjustment?

Check your timing.....

is your idle too low? Should be around 750 +/- 50

 

5. Check for vacuum leaks, 99% sure this is your problem... did you remove throttle body or intake manifold w/o replacing gasket with a NEW one?

 

I dunno... I actually tried to adjust the valves recently (and ended up breaking my head cover bolt) but I didn't notice any significant "drag" on the feeler, or lack of. How sensitive is that? I started with cylinder 1 and yeah... there was a tiny bit too much drag so I loosened it a tiny turn, but it could have just been that the angle I was using the feeler gauge was too sharp or something too. Is it pointless to adjust them if you can't even decide if they are a TINY bit too tight or loose? Does that really make a difference? I was expecting that there would be some huge gap or I wouldn't even be able to stick the feeler in between at all, but I found it hard to figure whether they needed adjustment at all.
