first of all I've done alot of searching and I'm still un satisfied with what I've found.

the B18C1 is only about 10 ft lb of torque more and about $1000 more!

I just dont see the purpose of spending another grand for a 10 ft lb gain. I understand that its a little more displacement but still, with the extra money I could put it toward turboing a B16...

that being said heres my even bigger question; What motor should I buy!?( I know, I know)

I plan on buying an EG hatch and doing a swap for a fast daily driver. I will have about 5k to put into it and I want to be in the mid 13s(faster would be better though!) I do know what I'm doing mostly, its just that most of my expirience/knowlage is with DSMs

what do you guys think? Will it be doable fo about 5k? which setup do you suggest? I was thinking boosted B16a but thats not the most reliable idea...

b18c gsr is better for boost or all motor, it has slightly less compression so it will be better for boost, and it has more torque, the b16 is only 5 more ft lbs of torque compared to a d16z6. Just remember this There is no replacement for displacement

I know that feeling. I thought my B16A3 was OKAY. But I always did wish I just got a GSR. But then I upgraded to an ITR and never looked back. Also, I've never heard anyone with a GSR say the would rather have a B16A.

 

i was in the same predicament last october. it was either b16a2 or b18c1. a 1000$ is a lot money, and i decided the b16a2 in my si hatch . for a while i didnt care (it was my first swap) and i loved it, the car felt nimble and was fairly quick, but the lack of torque gets old quick. soon after losing races which a b18c1 would have won me, i really wished i had the b18. it has so much more potential.

im currently looking for a cx (lighter than my si) and an ITR motor. the b16 just gets slow afer a while, go b18

I won't. I'm glad I got the GSR. Hands down more fun than a B16... except for those IABs....

In fact, my only regret is getting the B18C1 and not the H22.

 

Alot of people seem to frown on getting a h22 over the b18c. I always liked h22's I have never owned a GSR swap but I have drove them and they don't have enough umph for me.

 

b18c bro...cant go wrong with that...the b16 isn't too quick unless you have alot of mods...ived raced a 99 si with my EJ8...he had I/h and i had a diy intake....he pulled on me but not as hard as i thought he would...on the free way...sure hes pulling away but not by much...and not as fast as a gsr would pull on me...better yet...just got a b18c5...

 

Is this going to be your daily driver? if it is, get the b18c man. The extra tq in the low end is much more enjoyable for daily driving since you will be in low rpms most of the time. The b16 feels like a d16 out of vtec.

If your really dead set on a b16, then just boost it. The only replacement for displacement is boost. haha

 

b16's are cheap, good motors, and make excellent power when boosted.

build the block and your even in better shape

Ditto on that one. But yes... boosted then a B16 is a good motor for dragging since you'll be in high rpm down the track. Unfortunately... it is still a 1.6 liter.

 

wow, this is weird. i was just about to ask the same question as essdelsol, i just happened to come across this thread right before i was gonna start one.

i also am a seasoned dsmer thats fed up with those damn things and wants something quick yet reliable. and i to am looking to get a eg hatch and either throw a b16 or b18 in it. for now it will be n/a and im gonna take a break from boost but who knows, maybe boost down the line... i had the pleasure of driving my friend's 92 hatch with a b16 and i was pleased, is a b18 really that much different?? like a thousand dollars different?? thanks for any input, if anyone wants to email me or IM me with some info that could help a honda newb like myself it would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

 

yeah i have driven in my friends b16 eg and it was nice. after he got a gsr for cheap and we took it out and the car driving was way more funner. but really if i were in my friends position i would of just bought a turbo kit and later just built the b16 and bore it out probably, good luck with your choice.

almost accurate. With your level of participation, you should know better than to post up these numbers without being 100% sure.

Not being 100% sure?? I was correcting him because the b16a2 is rated at 160hp and 111tq from the factory, not 170.

 

now when they give these ratings, theyre what honda says the cars have. but thats with restrictive intake and exhaust and such. those numbers arent what the motor without those restrictions has is it??
