This applies to Integras as well as Civics, I was not sure where to post this so I put i in the ITR since it was going in an ITR.

Here are some pictures to compare filter sizes between the FRAM and WIX( large and small) oil filters.

Doing a search online said that the comparable replacement to the honda filter and the Fram PH3593A in WIX filters would be PN 51334, the smaller version of that WIX would be PN 51356.

Below are the images comparing sizes between the 3 filters.







WIX 51334 is slightly larger than FRAM, but the 51356 is much smaller then the FRAM and WIX 51356.

For those of you who are wondering why a large to small filter and vice versa. The theory is that a smaller filter would raise the oil pressure and in return yielding better VTEC activation, *shrugs shoulders*, the other side of the argument is a larger filter will give more area which will help lower the oil temperature.
I have not checked oil pressures or temperatures. Just bought the filters and thought I would share.

In my opinion, if you want to lower the oil temperature, i would suggest and oil cooler, or an oil filter relocation kit.

Also this is why SPOON, JUN, TODA....all the big Honda race guys and dumb little me use an S2000 Honda filter with a metal hose clamp tightened around the middle. This prevents any possibility of swelling.

Try that with your new filter.

 

I've been using the Mobil 1 filters for the longest time, the same size as the original Honda filter they used to sell before all this mini filter and S2k stuff. But then again I also still use the Mobil 1 5w30

 

Guys FWIW here @ Import Auto Salvage we will not use nor do we recommend our customers used FRAM oil filters. I am not bashing them but 8 out of 10 core engines we receive back have FRAM oil filters installed. We have cut several of them open to discover that they have collapsed internally leading to oil starvation. I know that FRAM is a readily available brand but I refuse to believe that this is the only reason we get so many core engines with them installed. On numerous; and I mean numerous occasions; we have sold B series VTEC engine swaps (USDM and JDM) to have the customer call us with a problem with VTEC. 9 out of 10 is a problem with VTEC not engaging. We inquire about wiring etc etc and determine everything is in order there. We then ask what brand oil filter they are using. Again 9 out of 10 say they are running a FRAM. As hard as this is to believe ( I have witnessed this in person several times ) upon changing from a FRAM to another brand the problem instantly was cured. I know this is hard to believe but trust me it is true many many times over. I will not use nor do i recommend anyone use a FRAM oil filter on anything they drive. Subaru actually sent out a service bulletin several years back and stated not to use a FRAM on their engines either. I personally use a Purolator (sp) filter and have never had any problems. Heck I just changed my oil an hour ago with no issues. I am not saying that all FRAM filters are junk I am just saying that I would not recommend them to my fellow ITR owners... We are a dying breed as it is so lets not loose any more C5's to oil starvation...

I'll use Fram filters in my Scout, but that's about it. Of course, that filter is damn near the size of my head, so even if the innards start collapsing, it probably won't impede flow.

WIX are highly-rated filters, but I'd still use OEM if I still had a Hype R. Hell, even my old Volvos get Mann (OE supplier to Volvo) filters.

 

Fram are crap with the minor exception of maybe the EG. Ok there I said it. WIX are rated very well indeed, unfortunately I can never seem to find them. So I bought a case of P1's a year or so ago.

I've used older-larger OEM (Filtech/Toyo Roki) and HAMP (also Toyo Roki), but never the newer OEM filters which are made by FRAM.

I currently use Purolator P1.

I like the K&N oil filter, yeah its a little pricey ~$12.00, but its got a "nut" on the end so I can get a normal wrench around it.
I hate oil filter wrenches
Plus I cut open my OEM filter, a FRAM, a Mobil 1, a STP and a K&N...wish I had taken pics...it was pretty amazing to me how different they were on the insides, considering they do the same thing.

Looks like mainly independent shops carry WIX filters. Is there a Walker Auto near you?

You can get those socket type things imagine a normal socket only big enough to fit the oil filter with the right ammount of sides, they are used with a 3/8" square end standard ratchet.

Yep I took a look on their site for a dealer locator. Looks like only small private guys and only a few left around me, no Walker Auto. Thanks, now I see a few that may carry some. But it's not a huge deal, I'm satsified with the P1's till their done and that's 4 more changes to go.

arent some oem honda filters made by hineywell...which is the same people that make fram? btw ive been using fram oil filters for about 4 years now and had no problems.

 

Fram? EEEWWW....and some Honda ones are made by Honeywell, some made by Filtech. I only run Filtech Honda filters

I use what may be a very little known brand to my American friends....

I suck at the web search right now (can't find pix) but it is made by a company called Altrom. It was recommended to me by a Japanese mechanic who helped start Tom's (Toyota) from what I understand.

I haven't had the chance to cut it open yet but compared to the FRAM made OEM filters in Canada....the bypass valve is metal and the casing is very thick (think Toyo-Roki) and is even painted the same Honda OEM blue.

I suppose the defining feature is that it is made in Japan....

But compared to my factory oil filter (Toyo-Roki - yes from '97) they appear to be identical in every exterior dimension....

I buy them by the half-dozen and it works out to be just under 6bux CAD each.

 

so True! yea altrom is a good brand too as well they are pretty much makers of everything for automotive stuff like rotors and stuff (which im using right now) used it for many track days and yet it still hasnt warped on me yet. but yup your right Altrom is made in the JAPAN ive noticed that too! My Uncles shop uses that too and swears by it...... but i still end up using Honda Honeywell oil filters ( i had like a case of 12) and im down to my last one... i guess after my last one im going to eiter A switch to Altrom or B use Purolator oil filters aka Vavoline which Prelude guys on our local boards swear by them :D

seriously, I use mobil 1 filters and castrol german syntec 0w30.

FRAM is nothing I would even consider.....
