Default ctr pistons on stock valvetrain?

ive got my b18 on a stand, cleaning it up and whatnot. its goin into my new eg, but i want to do a few things to it before i get it in the car. im going to put on a skunk 2 mani, chipped p28, and spoon headgasket. the motor is VERY healthy, no staining in the head, coolant was super clean when i drained it, the motor never smoked. but it does have 120 k on it so i want to do rings to prevent smoking possibly this coming season. i already wanted to do the ctr pistons, and it would be super convienient to do them now, while the motors on a stand. would i be ok running the ctr's with spoon headgasket on a stock valvetrain? i dont have the money right now to do it all in one shot.

you that should be fine, there wont be any valve/piston clearance issues. go for it

What b18 is it? b18c,a,b? IM guessing ur using a vtec head.. Ur compression is gonna be really high with ctrs..Like in the high 12's-13's

I am currently running standard size CTR's in my B18C1 with a stock valvetrain. I've ran this setup for about 15k miles and am very pleased. My C/R is ~12:1 and I don't use anything but 93 octane to avoid any detonation, I would advise you to do the same. But to answer your question, yes it is safe, I have run mine all the way up to 8,500 several times with my stock springs using CTR cams and Hondata, however I am planning on upgrading to a set of Supertech springs/retainers in the near future.

Out of curiosity, what cams will you be running with the setup? Using very aggresive cams and/or messing with the cam timing too much may cause clearance issues, so just be aware of that.

do you have a thin head gasket as well?
ill be running a completely stock valvetrain..... and will have a chipped p28 ecu.
do i need to play with fuel to compensate for the high compresion?

i will be using buddy club spec 3's next year... but theyre not too agressive

Right now I am using a Fel-pro 3 layer gasket, which is about the same thickness as an OEM gasket. I wouldn't suggest using a thinner gasket with the CTR's as that will result in an even higher C/R that might not be very streetable.

When you say you will be using a chipped P28, what exactly do you mean by "chipped?" What kind of chip is it, and what are the specs? Where did you get it from, and who installed it? I hope it isnt one of those ebay "Spoon ECU +58621HP" chips...

As far as your fuel question, you said you will be slapping on a Skunk2 IM, which will flow a lot more air than your stock gs-r...you should be ok running stock injectors with that *temporarily*, however that all depends on the "chip" and how it dictates how much air/fuel is flowing into your engine...now, when you upgrade to the BC stage 3 cams I would definitely recommend a set of upgraded injectors, preferrably RC 310s, along with a solid tune to really optimize the A/F ratio and make the most power out of your setup.

But to answer your question, you should be able to get by using your stock fuel sysem until you upgrade your cams.

well since i just got the car and decided what im doin i havent got the ecu yet. i was planning on getting a kenji p28 type r program. i can contact him for the specs and also let him know that i will be running high compression and he could tailor the program to that to a certain extent right? but for now i should be good with the ecu, an oem size headgasket and the ctr's? what to you mean by temporarily.... i dont want to compromise my engines reliability.... ill be running it this way until next winter when i can get the valvetrain cams and injectors

also, will i have to play with ignition timing as well? so i dont get pre detonation?

i've got ctr overbore .025 in my b16 block. i'm running the 3-layer fel-pro gasket too and as long as i run 93 octane or higher the motor's ran fine. a little rich but then again that's all in the tunning

yea. only difeerence is youve got a b16, which they were desighned for, in the b18 they make alot more compression due to differnt combustion chamber size. youre probably running around 11.1 or something... i found a nice deal on jhp... set of spoon balanced itr pistons, rings, wristpins for 330! consider them already installed!

damn that sucks! why did they do away with the higher octane?? regarding the pistons im goin with the itr. im going to be commuting to and from school everyday (45min drive each way) so i dont want anything that may wear out faster than it should. i think anything over 11.8 is too high for my needs, especially since when i do get cams they wont be very agressive. thanks for the input everyone!
