Noise at approx. 5000rpm
My Type R (DC2) has developed a noise at 5000rpm or so. Sounds like a vibration or a 'twang' as if there is a pre-load on the VTEC that isn't engaging properly.
Anyone else experienced this?
It goes away after a little while, happens when engine not really warm (not that I take it to high RPM's when cold, just noticed it) and after a good long hard drive it does not happen.
I think VTEC failed to engage once when cold and when it made this sound - When warm there is no power difference (i.e. when the sound dissapears).
Oil Pressure? (Oil levels are fine, 5000kms or so done, and need service).
Also I am only getting around 300kms to a tank -- There is a whistle sound at high rpm's, could this be a intake leak?
Thanks guys!!!!

I forget the exact temp but you need to warm the car up before Vtec will engage. You can test this theory if you'd like just don't go all the way to redline before the car is properly warmed up. Do it cold (after it builds oil pressure) and then let it warm up to full operating temp and try it again.

Also if you dont have enough oil vtev will not ingage also because of low oil pressure.

AHHH
..sorry the thought of going to redline on a cold engine was frightening. I had to run out and tell my car I'd never do that to it!

That's exactly my point. If it's cold and not up to temp it will not engage at all. It will feel like the car just fell on it's face.

But even after 5 minutes of driving and the temp needle is at optimal temp, the noise happens ..
So forget about vtec not engaging when cold, this must be a different problem. Sounds like somethign in the head.

I used to have a similiar sound inbetween 3-4k RPMS, it would rumble...
I took it to acura and they diagnosed it was my heat shield... it was warped or out of shape.. and was rattling inbetween those RPMS..
They wanted to charge me $125 for a new one, i declined and the mechanic just bent it real good in a way so it wouldnt do it anymore...

If this does happen at full operating temp, it very well may be a heat sheild. I've heard of this on a few peoples cars. See if you can get a friend to help you, put the car up on jackstands and rev the engine to that RPM. Listen to where it's coming from under the car. This would help pin point the location and give you a better idea of what your up against. GL. Let us know how this gets fixed.
