Easy way to seperate tranny from block?
What's the easiest/most effective way to seperate the tranny from the block. The engine is off the car and is sitting on my garage floor. I've tried and tried but nothing would work. I tried the prying points, no luck. Any other tip?
TIA

i'd say that sometimes its actually harder to pull the tranny from the block when its OUT of the car. when the engine/trans are still in the car, at least its bolted to something so you can get some leverage on it.
pulling the trans from the motor while still inside the engine bay is not that difficult. though re-aligning from underneath is a real bitch by yourself. holding that ~75lb thing up while trying to line up the shaft splines with the clutch can be a PITA.

I've pulled a tranny off a motor when it was in the car.. and out..
both times were equally as easy..
make sure you have *ALL* the bolts out... start at the top and go alll the way around....don't forget the brackets that mount at the bottom next to the dust cover
a little wiggling is all it needs.. or a few wacks with a rubber mallet.....

I've taken off quite a few trannies, and each time the same thing happens: I get pissed off because it's so close to coming off, I check and double check all the tranny bolts and the dust shield bolts. I try again, I get pissed....
Then my friend comes to help, asks if I got all the bolts, I say yeah, he checks anyways and finds one that I missed. Must have happened like five times by now.

jk..
if you have all those 17mm bolts out, make sure you have the FLYWHEEL'S 10mm DUST COVER BOLTS removed from the underside, where the tranny meets the block. Starter bolts also need to come out. It should easily come apart..or a small gap should open up between the trans and block which will allow you to seperate the 2 with a pry bar. If you have a cable tranny, just pull UP on the cable lever and the tranny should, sort of, pop off...
Now if I can get the tranny off, how hard would you guys say changing the clutch is?? Any special tools, jack, etc.??
On the same note...is a clutch alignment tool REALLY necessary? Or can I just "eye" it?
You can eye it. I do not recommend it.
I did on my b16 because the tool included in the clutch kit didn't fit at all and I didn't want to wait until tomorrow. If I had time on my hands I would have gotten the thing.
I don't see how it would affect clutch wear. In fact, I just took off my clutch the other day after a year of hard driving (about 100 time slips to prove it). No uneven wear at all.
