Default Just installed new rotors and pads but have a problem...

I just put new rear rotors and pads on my '01 GSR but there's a problem. On the driver's side, it looks like the pad isn't fully making contact with the rotor. There's about a 1 inch space all around the rotor that looks like it is not making contact with the pad. The passenger side looks like it should, with about 2-3 inches of contact all around the rotor. Here is a shitty picture of what I'm talking about since my digital camera is at someone elses house:

Someone told me it could be because I didn't line up the little cross on the caliper piston with the notch on the brake pad? Could this be what happened? Maybe I just got lucky on the other side and accidentally lined them up as I screwed the piston in?

That is most likely what happened not only will that happen but your pad and disc will eventually wear unevenly.

So if my other side looks good, there's no reason to take it back apart and check it right?

i'd get back underneath the car and check it out. They shouldn't have that much of a gap.

Just go back, check all the bolts to make sure they're tight. Try and take a picture of this when you get your camera back.

how's your braking? Does it feel off?
Stock size pads and rotors?
Front or rear brakes?
What kind of rotors and pads?

not like some of that matters, but i'm curious.

Ok I took them back apart and I don't see this tab or whatever that is supposed to line up with the caliper piston. Can someone help me out? My car is sitting out front and I can't drive it until I fix this. I've got Advanced Auto Rotors with Hawk Pads. The braking felt fine even with the gap. Oh and this is the rear brakes.

make sure you're new rotors are the same size as your old, if they are a little smaller the pad won't touch all of the rotor.

im pretty sure that the pads and rotors are just new and need some time breaking in... wfter they break in they will evenutually be flushed with each other.

*im having this issue right now with the fronts one.(just changed pads and rotors). im trying to break them in so it can be flush. a few hard stops will eventually do the trick.

I think you're right. I took everything apart and put it back together again and everything was done right, all bolts tightened. Nothing that would cause it to do that. After driving around all day today, the dull area is slowly becoming shiny. I talked to a mechanic and he told me to give it about a week or 2 to wear so that it contacts evenly.
