i said usually, i am going off my personal experience. i have installed a lot of lowering springs, and i have not had to use a spring compressor on any of the setups i worked on,
obvioulsy it depends on how much of a drop it is, my experience was with 2-3 in drops, tenzo r, neuspeed, matrix, tokico

since DA springs arn't compressed as much as lots of cars you can put the spring/shock assembly sideways and put a skateboard on top of the spring and make it work like a blocker that's what i did (don't blame me if you get hurt though)

I installed some Nuespeed Sport springs without a spring compressor, there wasn't that much pressure on the original springs. I just used a towel wrapped around the shock/spring assembly and backed off the top retainer bolt. It was cake, and putting the Nuespeed spings on my AGX's just took alittle pushing to get the top nut started. No need for a spring compressor on my 92 RS.
i used to let the springs shoot out. i had my foot on the bottom end of the shock and then loosen the bolt and then had a bucket on the other end to catch everything. i did that on all the cars i dropped. except for when i did a '02 accord V6. i wasn't gonna risk doing that. also the spring to big. anyways, use the compressor. i haven't had to use to compressor to put lowering springs back on.
go buy a freaking spring compressor....they are cheap...
stock springs are the ones pre-loaded, buy the tool now you will thank yourself when you use it again
