Transmission Fluid
Just looking for advice as to what type of fluid to run in a ITR trans with the stock LSD. The car is used for autox and road racing and I'm wondering if the stock Honda Manual Transmission Fluid will handle the temperatures of endro races or if you guys use something else.
Thanks.
Thanks.
hi.
i have used valvoline 10w-40 durablend semisynthetic motor oil in my tranny (2 different race cars) for the last 6 years racing. i change the oil 2 times per year (about 6-8 raceweekends per year).
zero failures; zero shifting problems. trannys shift really nice.

I've tried Redline MTL in my 94 civic with good results. Shifts great. I had some Mobil Clean 5000 10w30 in there, but the redline MTL made a difference.
I've heard even better things about Amsoil MTF http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/mtf.aspx You could go MTG if you wanted something a little thicker. I have two quarts of MTF that i'm going to put in very soon, I think it will perform better than the MTL.
and even better things about Specialty Formulations MTL-P/MTL-R http://www.specialtyformulatio...t.htm
The difference between using motor oils and a gear-specific oil is that engine motor oils do not contain EP [extreme] additives that gear oils do. While motor oils do contain anti-wear additives, a manual transaxle/transmission needs both AW and EP additives.

I tried it in my ITR - after 1 weekend the car shifted like chit. I ran the motul stuff for 5-6 weekends and it was fine.

I believe the HART guys don't even use Honda MTF on their race cars.

thanks guys for all of the advice. Looks like I have a little bit of research to do prior to coming up with a final decision of what to use. Good thing it's the off season.
