Fender liners, who still has them?
I'm thinking of removing the fender liners on my EG, and I was wondering if it was a good idea to leave them off.
The car is not a street driven so I wanted to know which of you guys are not running them on your track cars.

...realizing that it also means hot tires will fliprubber snakes and paddock pebbles up into hard to reach places back byt he door jambs, etc. I have seen dents up from the underside on the fender where rocks have hit from below and dented upward.

We've got them in our ITS Prelude and they'll stay there. Saw the results of a blown tire in the wheelwell of an ITB Accord and it wasn't pretty since it wiped out the wiring harness on this particular car. Our Prelude runs the risk of some significant damage if a tire blows and we would rather replace the plastic than other more time consuming things.
We had ours out of the Golf and put them back in after we saw how much crap ended up in the crevices and airbox. I trimmed off the bottom flap, that originally connected to a fakey underbody piece, because it was down in the airflow and looked like it might get caught on the leading edge of the tire.
I'm pretty sure we will put them on the new chassis, unless we discover that we are 1 pound from our goal minimum weight, and that's the last thing that can come off.

I was really debating to keep them or not. I saw that without them there is a lot of room for the tires, but then there was that huge gap next to the door.
One Idea was to cut the back part where the liner covers the jam between the door. If I keep the ones I have I may need to get new ones since mine are covered in tar.

I have mine out of my hatch and it is amazing were crap that gets thrown up from the tires gets. I have not had any problems with them off except I do have to do some more cleaning sometimes.
Also it is easier to work on IMO

After spening the time to remove all of the undercoating from the wheel-wells (major PITA), there was no way I was going to put the liners back in.

John....that is such a beautiful in-the-shop on-jackstands "action shot"...I think I'm gonna cry.
Scott, who is reminded that I need to improve my lighting...btw - I run liners (trimmed at the top for clearance)...

Are you using T8 fluorescents? what kelvin rating? Right now i have 4 twin-tube T8 shoplights lighting up a 2 car garage (16x20 i think?), 2 are using 4100k bulbs, 2 are using 5000k bulbs, I may buy the 6500K bulbs from philips at home depot. I dont have a floor in, and I know that this would help tremendously in reflecting light back up from the lights instead of the concrete. I'm thinking of epoxy instead of the more expensive (but worth it) tiles.

What did you do to remove all that stuff. The car I have not only has the OEM undercoating, but some tar stuff someone sprayed on there.

the decision was made for me, my right one was ripped out in turn 6 at thunderhill under load. tire just got enough grip and tore it out as the suspension bottomed out.
i remember thinking my tire blew out, but it was driving fine. figured it out the next lap.
crap getting thrown into the doors is a nuisance tho. ive seen cars rebuild part of the liner out of sheet metal just to shield the door.

The Crud Thug tool is pretty effective, but I don't have one. I do have a decent compressor, a air grinder and quite a few midevil torture device tools. I basically scraped most of it off with chissels, and then took the air grinder to it with various wheels.

That's probably what I'm going to end up doing. Unless I can find some place to rent a crud tool from.
