Looking for High Idle control valve
when i first start my car in the morning, the idle is very high, like 2500 RPM. then after like 1 minute, it will go up higher and then kick down to 500 rpm then go back up to 2500, this is pissing me off. i think i found the fast idle control valve, its behind the intake, RIGHT?? if not let me know. i want to get this deal fixed.and also another question, what kind of damage is it doing to my engine when it does that sparatic idleing. please help fast.
Need to know year, and engine size. On 98+ model 4-cyl the IACV is located behind the throttle body. There is a coolant hose and two bolts that have to be removed in order to get it off. Take your time and wait until engine is cold. The IACV is hard to see and reach on 98+ models. Only use Honda parts. Trust me on this one.

Try looking around the underhood labels or the sticker on the drivers door jamb; those are the best places to help you figure out what YEAR and MODEL you are talking about.

Mine is doing this too. The ODBII on my 1996 Honda Accord says P-0505 "Idle COntrol System"
Can you help me find it on this year Accord?
Is this a sure thing of a fix, replace the idle air control valve? What other problems can give the same error code?

On a '96 LX the idle-air control valve (IACV) is # 19 on the back of the intake manifold, near the throttle body. The fast-idle thermo-valve (FITV) is # 14, under the throttle body.

I'm not sure about other things causing that error code. Vacuum leaks? Sticking throttle? Maybe a badly-adjusted base idle might do that too.
At some point ('98?) Honda eliminated the FITV & included that function into a newer type IACV.

Yes your right again, Jim. A poorly adjusted base idle will cause the rpm's to go up and down during cold start up. But, most of the time it's a bad IACV. Cleaning it will help, but will probably come back. Might as well replace it while it's off the car. I changed mine on my 98 4-cyl around 100k miles and it was a bitch. I couldn't see what i was doing. I had to play by feel since it was hidden behind throttle body.
