Default new LS turbo setup, building an LS head

ok,i have a 94 integra RS...i boosted it earlier this year,my setup consisted of :

B18b1
Drag cast iron manifold
Tial 38mm wastegate
Garrett T3/T4 turbo
2.5'' downpipe @ exhaust

it was untuned...it only dynoned 203whp...@10psi.(i think the dyno was off).just added some fuel tables to the ecu chip, running rich as ****...and i ran a 13.5 @ 105 at richmond dragway, with a stock slipping clutch, and shitty kumho tires.

now im gearing up for next year..cus i already see its gonna be more competitive...now i see everyone else doing ls vtec turbo, and opting to switch out for a vtec head..and ive made up my mind, that im not going to do it..i simply do not feel like doing the conversion..i strongly believe that i can accomplish my goals of a nice powerband, even hp/torque curve, and a great flowing head,by building the ls head...now this is what i wanted to do :

Portflow street/strip port on the head
3 angle valve job
Crower titanium dual valve springs and retainers
2mm oversized Intake valves
1mm oversized exhaust valves
Crower Turbo cams

i wanted to offset the intake and exhaust valves,so i can forced more air in on the intake side, since the exhaust will have no problem letting it out, with a Ramhorn style manifold, and given that the ls heads, are already lacking on the intake side.

the only question i have is...how big is "too big" ?? are the valves i plan on getting, too big? will i have valve tap,or piston tap issues? cus i already have JE 9.5:1 pistons..

not too many people build LS heads..im not doing it to be "Different"..im doing it,because i want a powerband that maxes out around 7500,instead of 8500,or 9 grand..and i want to even my hp/tq numbers out a little more...more so 350whp and 300tq..instead of 375whp,and 260tq...because of the revs.

let me know if im going about things wrong,or someone steer me in the correct direction..other than saying "Get a vtec" head...please,thank you.

i like the way that you are thinking with your setup. i really do. good luck with accomplishing your goals. its seems as though all your parts are within reason and you should have no problems making the power.

thanks man,i appreciate the encouragement..

see the parts i have on my car now,are all coming off..

im getting a tubular ramhorn manifold
40mm wastegate
3'' exhaust with no cat
T3/T4 with a 70 trim
Skunk2 intake manifold
70mm TB

i think with those, and a built head..350 is a "Reasonable" goal on my ls..not my Optimum power...but i think 350 will keep my happy on the street..and get me to low 12's...high 11's with some slicks,a good clutch/flywheel setup..and a LSD.

i think your idea is great good luck with the build it seems as if you really looked into this. and you should easly make 350 with good tuning and fuel management. just remember tuning counts more then just numbers.

Most people would say you cant pull numbers out of an LS because of the head, and it would be a waste to build it, i say otherwise

I built my LS head, and it dramtically increased the powerband, flowed much better, and the powerband was shifted much higher in the RPM band...

Ported and polished, 5 angle valve job, .5mm oversized exhaust valves, crower 62402t cams, dual springs and tit. retainers.

you can take a look at my numbers here....
http://forums.evans-tuning.com...=2275

for the power you are looking to make, i wouldnt hesitate to build the LS head,
just keep an eye on valve adjustments...on high boost levels i find myself doing adjustments pretty often, the one downfall to the ls head assembly!

Good luck!

I would worry about this before i dove into putting new parts on it. Spend alot of time tuning the motor the way it is before you go any further with it.

I really like your plans though, props on not going to the vtec side. Good luck with everything, but remember tuning is the MOST important part of any build.

I also agree with that! tuning is KEY in any setup! id spend more money on tuning before i spent more money on parts

can you just throw in some oversized valves and not after to do anything to the head?
or do you have to do a 3 angle valve job or something?

good luck with your setup. and keep us updated with your car and how its running. your logic with this project seems vary well thought of. but personally i would put a Vtec head on there, i just love the high revs and loud scream of it! well, again good luck with this build and keep us updated!

thanks for the encouragement, and the ideas..i am now motivated to continue building my motor,in hope to put out similar numbers.

im going to send you a pm with further questions about the Headwork that was done with your motor.

hey...i was just wondering...is there a specific reason you went with .5 oversized valves? because i want to use atleast 1mm or 2mm oversized..but i cant find anyone who has done that..and could tell me if im going to have piston or valve tap issues....any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks again.

I say you go with crower 404s instead of the 402s, like mentioned b4 tuning is the key

I Built my LS head and had some similar #'s with my motor. I went with Crower turbo cams, Crower titanium retainers and dual springs, Ferrea exhaust and Rev intake valves. I did my own port and polish work. The bottom end is also built but my car put down 394.8 hp @7200 and 298.66 tq at 6850 on 15 psi pump gas. As far as valve to piston clearance, I still have some room but I am running 9:1 comp Wiseco Pistons. When I previously built my motor I was running 10.5:1 comp JE pistons and I still did not hit with the same head set up. (that is until i got boost happy and ran my motor on 14 psi with 10.5 pistons and detonated my motor. (a very expensive lesson)) PM me if you have any further questions.

i dont know how to PM anybody yet..can someone explain to me how?

anyways..how big were your valves on the intake and exhaust side?

heh..i know im not the one to answer this Q..but i dont think you have to do a Valve job on the valves,to put them in the head..the only thing i think you have to worry about,is the clearance between the piston head, and the valve head...but then again,im thinking,if your pistons have valve reliefs built into the piston head..you shouldnt have to worry about that either.

what kind of fuel mgmt are you running? im assuming youre using at least an intank high flow fuel pump? i wouldnt run an ecu chip for fuel mgmt!

you can build the head... give it a good port and polish... upgrade the valves, springs, and retainers.. preferable skunk2 or crower.

but in my opinion, i'd go with a hondata 2b.. get it tuned... and maybe upgrade the exhaust to a 3inch with a resonator to keep it as quiet as possible. you should also invest in a skunk2 intake manifold...

you can build your head but it wont make too much of a difference... but it will help. use the money for what i mentioned above.

i appreciate the concern..but it seems like no one is listening to what i have been saying :

this turbo setup, was my first setup, just to get it off the ground and running...my TUNER used UBERDATA to tune my car..but he did a basetune...just messed with the fuel tables a little bit,and smoothed out my AF's up top,so i wouldnt lean out in higher rpms...he did it for 100 dollars..so i went along with it...but he did Techically "chip" the ecu...i watched him..he used a wideband,a laptop, and a eprom chip burner.

As far as fuel...i have 450cc DSM injectors..and thats all i need right now..im not dumping enough fuel or air,to need a walbro 255...ive been boosting 10 psi for the last 3 to 4 months...my fuel pump has not showed signs of giving out..so therefore i will not get one...i know what im doing..im WAITING until my next setup,to upgrade.

so for everyone that is telling me to get the car tuned...im not going to..the oil seals on the turbo are blown, and the car has been running rich on 10 psi for the past 3 to 4 months..and its winter time..there is no point to get it tuned now..i will finish building my other LS motor..and drop that one in...and get that one tuned.

the Real question that i need answered..everyone is skipping over.

What is the biggest oversized valves i can go with on the int. and exh. side of the head, before i run into any problems?
