Default question about electronic immobilizers

I got a level-1 by "the Club" for free from a guy at work, never been used.

anything I should know about it before attempting to install it?

or is it not worth it to even install?

It's another key you turn, then take the key back out and you have 30 seconds to start the car.

It all depends on the install. If you put it right on the ignition harness, then you're making it easier to hotwire the car. If you put it on the main relay, fuel pump power, or a critical ECU wire, and you make the wiring inaccessible and invisible, then you have a fancy kill switch. I suggest you hide the whole thing even though they intend for you to leave the switch portion of it in the open.

They keep coming out with more and more advanced switches. I don't care if it does a retinal scan, if you can get to the wiring, you don't need to defeat the switch itself. I don't care if there's 10 dummy wires, cuz you go right to where those wires connect to your car's wiring.

It's definitely good as another layer to a security system, but if it just gets installed inline on the ignition harness, it will be pretty easy to bypass.

I couldn't find much on it when I briefly searched google, but I'm assuming it's pretty much a starter kill... Easy to bypass just by connecting the wire you cut to install the unit...

But like I said... It's another security layer that will cost a potential thief valuable time, or cause him to move on to an easier target....

I will agree with B18C_EJ8 but not suspendedHatch, by the sounds of it, [turn the key and remove then you have 30 sec. to start car] that tells me after 30 sec. that circuit is open again, so the only thing it will work on is the starter, or maybe the clutch safety switch or neutral switch, it could only be used on something that is only needed for starting the car, not anything that keeps the car running, [fuel pump power] however I do agree with suspendedHatch, [and B18C_EJ8] that whatever you do, it needs to be done in a more "hidden" location then the ign. harness at the steering column 94

the manual says that it wont open the cercit for 30 after the car is shut off... so i think it is always closed once the car is running.

That may be possible, and if thats the case, its the only immobilizer that has a timed start, that would not open the circuit after the 30 sec. car running or not, that I know of. All the ones I have installed, [that use some kind of temporary "key" and not a "key" that stays in the immobilizer] once timer runs out the circuit is open, it would however make sense if you build an immobilizer with more then just starter kill, [ a 2 or 3 point immobilizer] and the key is removed after "deactivating" at least 2 of the circuits would have to stay closed. 94
