Default Wheel bearings?

I keep hearing a fast ticking when my windows open coming from the driver side front. I think it could be that i need a new wheel bearing, but is there a way to find out if thats it before i go somewhere and get raped by the mechanic.

Also is it something that you could do on your own without having a bunch of specialized tools?

Its not an axle problem trust me, they are both "newerish", 2k on them maybe.

Thanks

It'll be more of a thumping sound, and your window doesn't have to be open to hear it. It'll get worse as you pick up speed if it is indeed a wheel bearing. You may even be able to feel it in the steering wheel at higher speeds.

No idea, but 2 ways to see if it is the wheel bearings, jack the car up, put one hand at 12 oclock and the other at 6. If you can move it foward and backwards its a bad wheel bearing. When mine were bad I couldn't do it but they were still shot. The other way is around 70mph - 80mph is when you'll feel it and hear it the most, so hit up a highway and cruise to 80 and see what happens.

My wheel bearing is shot, and it makes a wawawawawawa sound at any speed. It increases as my speed increases. No idea what a ticking could be. Goodluck

A ticking from your window is usually a rock stuck in your tire, seriously. You can ususallly feel the whole car echoing the grind of a wheel bearing.

The ticking is from the wheel bearing. I had the same problem and I replaced pretty much everything down there that could be making that annoying noise and it didn't help. I had the wawawaawawwawa noise, so I replaced the wheel bearings and both noises went away.

i tried doing this when i my car was squeaking and it just ended up to be those dumb mechanics didn't tighten the spindle enough. after i tightened it up, it was fine but car still squeaks..it's progressively getting louder.

any suggestions what it could be? i was told it still might be the wheel bearing but it squeaks at a certain rotation of the tire. once i get it up to speed, the noise goes away..

btw. thread jack.
