problem shifting from park to drive
im having some problem with my 99 accord when trying to shift from park to drive or reverse. after stepping on the brakes for about 5 or 6 times i get lucky to shift the **** to reverse. any one know what the problem is? brake sensor?
It's what's called the shift interlock system. It keeps the shifter from moving until the brakes are applied.
There are two major components:
DPST Stoplight switch (Dual Function)
Interlock Solenoid @ shifter.
There are two ways the switch can fail:
!) Misadjusted (Stop Lamp trick check) from size 12.5 EEE gunboats rummaging around under the dash
2) Electrical Failure (doesn't close, passing voltage to solenoid)
The connector at the switch can come loose (refer 1 )
or the solenoid could be bad.

u were correct about this when this happens the brake light does not work even though im applying the brakes!!!! as soon as the brake light works im able to shift it from park to reverse or drive.
so ur telling me to replace the brake light switch on the brake pedal right? is that easy to replace or do i have to take it to a transmission place? is it going to be expensive?

The Brake lamp switch is a simple and unexpensive piece to have replaced. It's mounted in the vicinity of your Brake Pedal. If you're small enough, it would be possible to do this yourself (in that you have to work under the Dashboard, upside-down on your back), and you had the correct tools.
Either that or have your Mechanic / Repair Guru do the job. Hopefully, his labor rate won't be way up there.

today morning i decided to try my luck. as per the instructions i squeezed myself upside down to find the brakelight switch. It was easy to remove. I tried all the auto shops but they dont keep the brakelight switch in stock. if i order it it would take another 3 or 4 days, instead i decided to try to go to the honda dealer , the price of the part was twice the rates in the auto store, but anyway i bought it replaced the old part put the new one in. AND ITS WORKING GREAT!!!
THANKS TO ALL U GUYS WHO GAVE ME THE DETAILS OF THE PROBLEM
