Default Oil level - hot or cold?

So are you supposed to check your engine oil level when it's warm or cold? If warm, how long do you let it stand before checking it? I poured oil in to the correct level when it was warm but then I checked it when cold and it was above the top hole. What does it do if it's a little above the top hole (like 3 mm maybe)?

Yeah check it when it is cold. What can happen if there is too much oil in your engine, im not sure how far it has to be above the top dot, but 3mm should be OK. What can happen, I believe that it will put too much pressure on your gaskets/seals and blow them.

it will slosh around in the pan too much and also it creates pressure where you don't want any causing **** to leak... simply put it's not a good idea. I would take some out

Yea , COLD works best , the reason ? cuz all the oil was settled to the bottom If you start it and then check alot of oil wont just be sitting in your oilpan , kinda makes sense

The reason I asked about the cold vs. hot is because when cold it's all sitting in the oil pan but then other people say to do it when hot because the oil expands. Well I guess I'll drain it then, I don't know why my dad told me to add more considering he used to be a mechanic and worked on cars for a lnng time.

just remember you gotta take alot of what people say on here with a grain of salt. theres alot of people on here who think they know alot about cars that love to stand up on their box so they can preach any chance they get.
