Default Arc welding stainless

HI , i have been trying to tack up some downpipe with my 200amp arc welder but with no luck. Is there a special electrode I should use in order to tack/weld stainess with an arc? I was thinking that the electrode I am using might be too thick. its around 7mm.

When i try to weld with full power I can see the electrode giving spark and heating up red but no actual or very little melting happens.

I need to tack this downpipe up so I can take it to get tigged.

Thanks

Well, your electrode has to be a stainless rod. Other than that I'm not sure.

you probably can but i wouldn't highly not recommend it. You are trying to using a different electrode that is for steel. One basic thing to think about is that the two metals will expand and contract at different rates when heated and cooled. This could lead to cracking.
