Default What could cause this

My hood has a kind of dark black film on it on the side towards the engine. I haven't tried to wash it off yet. The black is not completly solid and you can still see some of the white of the hood. What could cause my hood to get this black layer on it?

Just exhaust and road crap. At least that's what it was in my case. Just wash it off with a degreaser. It comes right off.

thats from oil/dirt. overtime you will get that. most of the time its because someone didnt put the oil cap on tight, or because of a small oil leak.

Could a leaking valve cover gasket cause this? There isn't any possible way that it could be my coolant evaporating from a leaking radiator cap could does this, could it?

Just normal road grime. Happens to all cars. Just clean it.
