That was an autocross put on at the corvette factory in bowling green, ky, in conjuciton with the release of the C5 - it was a nice little C5 party and it was not an SCCA sanctioned event. If it were, the course would have not run that close to the edge of the pavement, and those spectators would not be allowed anywhere near the course there. Autocross can be made unsafe... but NASA and SCCA do a great job keeping it safe They get a

Supposedly, that person was sitting in a chair and that's what you see go flying by to the left.

Everyone SHOULD know that there's risk involved in motorsports, no matter what level...that said, i'd rather be autocrossing than trusting regular traffic.

Yes that person was sitting down. There was another video that showed a larger view of the course. No one is supposed to be sitting down while working the course.

And yes accidents can happen just like any sport or motorsport. Even in Chess you can get carpal tunnel syndrome

I have never heard of any fatality during an autocross. I have only heard of one death at a track school.

And this clip is rather old news.

Team.Net talks about it every once and again. I think the story goes that someone was driving a high horsepower car like a vette. He had a passenger with him in the car. Anyway, he had a heat attack that killed him and in the process managed to hit the curb and launch the car in to a tree, thus killing the passenger. From the story, there were absolutely zero signs of the guy trying to stop.

There have been very few fatalities, but plenty of damaged cars.

if you move the video frame by frame, you see the guy running, then the car nose-diving, hitting the guy, and then the guy flying. looks like he ran the wrong direction.

Umm, that guy was a corner worker.
Yes he was sitting down.
Yes that is a really, really bad idea.
Yes this was a non-sanctioned event.

Let that be a lesson to you boys and girls. Never put your back to a car on course, and don't sit down while the course was green.

These guys were volunteers, though. They weren't participants, and were working the corner ******** cones all day in the summer heat. Hence the fact he was sitting down. Still a bad idea.
