Default Bumper Supports Needed for Road Racing

Should I or should I not take out my front and back bumper support on my 91 Civic HB. I am setting up the car for Honda Challenge. I am trying to drop back some weight from the cage. Is this a bad idea to take out the bumper supports?

Not a good idea for any racing. You need those things to bump and get bumped!

You can however remove the bumper supports and replace them with ones that you make that serve the same purpose, but are much lighter! Not very hard to do, but only legal in H1!

I saved a good bit of weight from these.

Look at the date
Also, did we calculate a 10lb loss going with your setup?

I would NEVER run a unibody car without bumper supports.. One little smack could cost you a 1000$ frame pull.

I had my fun running 2100-2150 lbs running weight in H1 without bumper supports the first year of WCHC...but then again most of the time I ran away from the competition so why were bumper supports even needed?

you need them if you run with bernardo

I put a CRX HF bumper support on my F Prod car and it is a flimsy piece of sheet metal just to hang the bumper cover with and has no protection whatsoever against impacts. If I touch anything, it is into my radiator and core support immediately. In my few races this summer, this has weighed heavily on my mind to the point that I plan to add some under structure for the front. I like the above pics of the SMSP car and will probably do something quite similar while incorporating the HF cover hanger.

Lee, I am used to 1st gen. CRXs, but not 2nd gen. ones. I know the '86-'87 Sis have the 5 mph front and rear bumpers, while the '85 Sis have 2.5 mph bumpers. Do 2nd gen. HF CRXs have 2.5 mph bumpers?

Keith, who has no bumper "shock absorbers", nor major bumper bars...
