Sup guys, quick question, i'm running some NGK-Rs BLK5's i believe in my ITR motor, I have a Sparkplug gapper but when i put it on the plugs it reads .040....i think thats too high they should be around .028?? maybe?? if you know the specs to gapping a plug for all motor lemme know plz.. and how would i go about it, i'm just told to hit them with a hammer, yet i haven't..any advice?

all depends on set-up. if you have enough spark to ignight to fuel at high rpms its good to have a larger gap, as long as the spark doent get blown out. going smaller will be safer like a .038 or lower, there are ups and downs with both just fine tune and if possible dyno the results.

My first inclination is that your plug selection is too hot for high compression/high RPM use. The factory recommended plugs for high RPM applications (PFR6E-11) are already a step colder than the 5's you are using, and are pre-gapped (XXXXX-11) at 1.1mm (0.043").

I don't know what your setup is [maybe you should tell us], but I can tell you from my own experience that the factory ignition system will support more than 300whp with the correct temperature plugs gapped at 0.040"+.

I was told by a buddy a long time tuner friend of mine that i should close em up alittle bit, yes i rev, very high but i'm told that the bigger the gap = better for sc/turbo apps and nitrous, i do run nitrous but i have plugs i use when i run nitrous, i was just wondering about the gap on a all motor setup.. i thought .40 was too big myself....i can retune w/e i need too, tell me th best bet..

Typically smaller gaps are used with turbo setups due to the increased resistance across the plug gap caused by denser charge. If you really want to know the science look up the density dependant dielectric characteristics of air. Try out a gap around 40 thousandths on a dyno, if you don't have power losses due to ignition in the higher RPM ranges, leave it, if you do, close the gap a little and try again.

Good luck!

Sounds like a pretty mild build to me. Based on what you have disclosed, I don't think there is any reason you need to rev past 8600. I would also recommend NGK BKR6EIX-11 plugs without N2O and BKR7EIX-11 with N2O shots of less than 100HP.

0.044 is too big most of the time.

there's alot of reason to rev past 8600, my car doesn't stop pulling.. id idn't spend over 1000 bucks on a valvetrain not to rev past 9 believe me..

Rocket was the best gap size for motors with 12.4 and up comp

0.035 - 0.038 works good.

Gapping technique is solely dependant on the energy output of the coil and the atmospheric conditions in the cylinder when the plug is fired...

You'll find that there are alot of other things to consider long before plug gap becomes a performance issue.
