ACL race rod bearings

can you simplify that?

I used the "HX" race ACLs on my mains, and the "standard" ACLs for my rods on my d16. From what I gather, there are two different race bearings. The "H" bearings are the same thickness (equivalent to a honda green) as the standard ACLs. The "HX" bearings are 0.001" looser than the standard ACLs. Besides that, I understand the difference between race and regular ACLs is that the race are "harder"--and will not deform as easily from detonation. Also, if you look at the race bearings they are darker--they are missing some sort of coating I am told. ACL bearings rock.

So do you HAVE to run more clearance with the harder bearings?
Why couldnt you run stock clearances?
And what makes them harder (dont tell me viagra either)?
Ill be rebuilding soon and have always used oem myself. Never had a problem but if theres something better, Im all ears

I think ACL's are fine, but OEM is better for proper sizing and that's important...right?
P.S. I'm not challenging DonF in any way, hell no...but I think he agrees with this.

Usually--the clearances stack up pretty nicely with the "standard" ACLs--which are in the middle of the thickness chart, green honda. In addition to the "HX" race ACLs (0.001" expanded oil clearance) the standard ACLs come in 0.25mm (0.010"), and 0.50mm (0.020") oversize, meaning less oil clearance. In regards to the select fit OEM bearings being "better" than ACLs, you could always get your block line-honed, or the crank ground a bit to fit the ACLs with "perfect" clearance. To say that oem honda is better than ACL is pretty blanket statement. ACL is an OEM bearing supplier to alot of car companies, particularly Ford of Australia and Holden (GM subsidary). I think Honda bearings are fine, but Honda bearings really weren't designed to withstand 10,000 rpm or 600 hp and up. The ACL race bearings were probably made with abuse in mind.
A) Earl reccomended against the useage of the ACL Race bearings in street motors.
B) But DonF likes them in all motors when built with suitable clearances.
C) OEM is preferred by Larry Widmer aka The Old One.
D) Clevite, reccommended by Smokey Yunnik (holler!)

I think some people don't like the ACL race bearings in street motors is because the oil must be kept very clean. Since the bearing is "harder" there is less embedability--in other words the bearing won't "absorb" particulate matter as well as an oem bearing designed for a long service life.
All ACL's are harder by nature of the bearing material.
The Race ACL's do not have the electroplating that only serves to make the bearing look better. The 0.00001 thickness of this electroplating doesn't add to embedibility.
Plus more people run airfilters on street motors than not.

Also--I know that some engine builders take a dry paper towel and "scrub" that top electroplate layer off the bearing. The claim is that it can "shift" and "build up" on one area of the bearing--causing a loss in oil clearance. What are your guys thoghts on this?
