turbo makes high end power, supercharger will make less total power, but it'll come in earlier. don't expect too much more out of a y8 though.

A supercharger runs off a crank pulley, so even if its' making less than a turbo, it's always making power, while a turbo needs to spool up (2500-3500 rpms usually) to be able to make the power. Under that it's like driving a stock car.

Do they even MAKE d series superchargers?

I do believe I have seen one D supercharger but I am not sure. Jackson Racing maybe?... i dont remember.

Doesnt turbo spool and turbo power delivery depend on several things like the size of the turbo and the a/r? A smaller turbo could deliver some lower end power, now not exactly like a superchager but doesnt the SRT-4 with its tiny turbo make like 250ft/lbs @ like 2,400RPM? Not a completly even comparison (2.4 vs 1.6) but you get my drift.

Yes it depends on turbo size for spool up, but a turbo thats worth anything will take a while to hit full boost....stock VW turbos have no lag but wheeze up top, they're much too small. A well balanced turbo size would take until 2500-3000 to make full power and be able to keep doing it to redline.

you could super charge and turbo, and have all around power... but risk blowing up the block.

Don't forget about the tubo manifold and exhaust. A ram horn and a log mani will spool way different and the size of the dp will also vary the performance of the turbo.

With a well desighned mani you can run a slightly larger turbo without sacrificing much if any spool time or make that little turbo spool so fast you'll need slicks to get any traction off the line.

Good points. I am only begining to learn about the finer points of turbos/turbo setups so thanks for the good info.

I think i've seen this done once on the Mini Cooper S, a turbo kit for the supercharged factory engine. Otherwise it's a very bad idea.

i have a d16y7 with a straight t3, low end power is great. 1st gear spins and is pretty much usless, so you can still turbo and have low end power, just dont you a gt42r on a stock engine
