Help on valve clearance on D16Y8
Hi guys,
I have a stock D16Y8 with 93K on it. Last weekend I adjusted the valve clearance to the proper spec of .017mm for the intake and .022 for the exhaust. I worked on valves on piston 1 - TDC 12 o'clock
valves on piston 3 - TDC 9 o'clock
valves on piston 4 - TDC 6 o'clock
valves on piston 2 - TDC 3 o'clock
rotating counter clockwise.
Proper torque of was applied when tightening the locknuts. This was all performed when the engine was less than 100 degrees F.
After completing this and installing back everything, I started the engine and noticed that the engine is much noisier with ticking sound on idle at around 800 rpm.
What did I do wrong?

I don't have my helms handy; but did you use the min or max tolerance?
When you had the feeler gauge in there, did it move freely, or was there resistance? It takes a while to get the feel of it, but the gauge should be pretty tight in there.

Well ****, no wonder its loud. Valvelash on a Y8 is suppose to be between like .006-.007 on the intake side and .008-.009 on the exhaust. Hope I helped ya out
Autoxer,
At first try I tried .18mm and .23mm and the engine sounded like diesel engine. Waited a couple of hours to make the engine cold again and applied .17mm and .22mm. It sounded a little quite but still noisy, this time, it had a lot of resistance as a result I had a deep cut on one of my fingers because when I pulled out the feeler gauge, it hit a sharp object.
Will it damage anything if the adjustment is below the specified spec?
I drove it to redline on 1st and 2nd gear this morning and noticed a different sound like a delayed sound on redline, definitely something I did wrong. I'll check the clearance again tomorrow morning.
cb7tunerman, .18 and .23 is in mm, your spec is the equivalent in inches.
Anyone knows if the oil had something to do with it. Required is 5W-30, however, I used Mobil One Synthetic 10w-30 for the first time.
Thank you.
