transmission fluid analysis automatic
Anyone out there done a fluid analysis of their anto trans fluid? I have flushed mine and done 24,000 miles and will have results shortly. Bobistheoilguy site only have several from newer honda accords and mine is a 97. Just hoping to get some data to compare mine with. Thanks. Site is http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ the transmission analysis section is http://theoildrop.server101.co...;f=50

You can have someone diagnose the condition of your transmission and/or engine by sending in a sample of the fluid you removed from it. Can possibly tell you a whole lot of information on your vehicle. Too bad I don't know of any local place near me that does this, or else I'd be sending samples in with just about every fluid change.

I hate to play the guy that is like what a waste.... but i suppose that it would be worth it if you were really curious. However, lets just say you send in a sample, and it shows metal and friction material contamination.... That tells you what? Your trans is failing. If you do nothing... send no samples in, and your trans fails... you know your trans has failed. The repair in both cases would be replacing the transmission.... or rebuilding it. There is not too much other than fluid changes you can do to prevent trans failures. It just seems like information that you really don't need. Just my opinion.

by the way do u have to pay to get the fluid anilized??? , if so save ur money and fill ur fuel tank.. .. if not do something more useful with ur spare time .like it was stated by tech-pro it is a waste of time ,, especially the guy that wants to do it every fluid changes..

That was me, and now that I think about it more, it does makes TONS of sense...about metal shavings and friction material contamination would indicate the trans wearing out....

It does make sense, if you run non-oem stuff. But since most people run oem stuff in their trannies, most of us dont do it.
Ive gotten blackstone analysis on my engine oil, and those are pretty intersting.

I guess the main thing it tells you is are you changing the fluid often enough. Many have discovered that the Honda recomendation of 100,000 mile transmission fluid change is a joke. Some transmission require regular changes say 30,000 mile while others can go 100,000+ without problems. Also I have the option of selling this car at any time I feel the transmission is going south and an analysis could tell me that also. It cost 20 dollars which sounds resonable to me for a car with a history of possible transmission problems. By the way it looks like Honda Accords need fairly frequent fluid changes per 5-6 fluid analysis that have been done. Complete changes at 30,000 or drain and refill every 15,000 seem best from what I have seen. Don't spend your money and stay in the dark if your like.

I agree man.
I personally flush it at 50k and change about every 15-20k. Ive seen a lot of trannies in our gen die because of that.

Doesn't the crud on a magnetic plug tell you all that you need to know if it is going bad? I drain and refil the 2-3 quarts every other oil change... and it still slips some, but it is old. I also have a bunch of crud on the magnetic plug every time. I have gone a long time after I started to see metal shavings. If I can get another 50K at hit 300K on one tranny, then I cannot ask for more.
I guess the crud on the plug does not tell you a whole lot. I had a small amount at this change but the report came back as excellent. You can see the report on the bobistheoilguy site if you like. I now believe 30,000 mile drain and refill will do the job. I guess I have saved myself 3 quarts of z1 every 15,000 by checking this fluid. link is

I figure if I change my engine oil every 3,000 miles, and my transmission fluid every 30,000 miles my engine and trans will not fail me.(at least not because of fluids) 100,000 miles, no way I'm waiting that long. Trans fluid doesn't cost that much.
