Default Exhausts: SMSP vs. MUGEN

which one produce more power on my 5th gen? Or do you guys prefer another brand?
My mods: stock internals, cai, 4-2-1 DC (but will probably get an SMSP), magnaflow hi-flow cat, mugen exhaust, unorthodox pulley set, msd digital 6plus (not currently installed)

smsp by far....it and the rmf are your top options...

a step down are the an-r header and a 2.5collector greddy

Well this is what I did...I did away with my greddy evo...which I am going to sell soon. Since I already put my order for the SMSP header. I talk to dave and he recomend that I go 2 1\2 inches all the way. So I bought my full exhaust from him. From the header all the way back. The exhaust I got from him is only $125. Since dave's headers are well know for HP gains I decided that I can't go wrong with his whole set-up. Of course it's up to you. When I get them inIwill make sure to let you know how it turns out...

neither. you're dc header isn't the best idea to be pushing power with.

125?????? maybe if it's not stainless...

the smsp tubing kit alone goes for over 200, figure 100 for a decent muffler, 60 for a resonator and about 200 for a good install.

at about 560 your still saving more than 500 versus the mugen for a custom exhaust with 2.5 or what ever all the way through.

of course mugen is mugen and it's quiet as hell from what I hear so it depends on your preference and long term goals

the mugen is exhaust is very quiet, unless in vtec, then you can really hear it...but i wonder how an SMSP exhaust sounds like..

that's why i said i was going to get the SMSP header. i was just wondering if i should just get his exhaust all together instead of running an SMSP and a mugen exhaust.

The only time I would buy an SMSP header or cat-back is when I have a fully built H22. Until then, Mugen is a good choice.

doesn't need to be smsp piping, but i'd go with 2.5" all the way to the back. the 60mm mugen piping will create some restriction in the exhaust system.

the mugen will be quieter, but the price you pay for better flowing exhaust is exhaust note...

Also, King Motorsports says the Mugen is 54mm to the midpipe 60mm after that. So unless you plan on stopping after your basic i/h/e the mugen isn't your best choice, I'm with bad-monkey it's worth the noise just make sure to keep a resonator or two in mind when going custom... unless of course you like the rice noise.

im wondering, if i get an RMF header, what do i need to complete the exhaust, do i need a high flow cat? and what size 2.25" or 2.5" and then what size for the exhaust piping?

so you're saying the SMSP will sound ricey? and have you guys ever heard the mugen in person? b/c IMO i think it's got one of the best exhaust notes compared to the other ones out there.

Not ricey.

There is a post someplace of a dyno run of my header and exhaust on a Type R but I can't seem to find it right now.

hey dave!
cool, you're actually here to answer my questions.

I plan on going N/A and am looking to purchase your full system (from the header all the way to the end of the exhaust). Was wondering roughly how much would all that be? and approximately when will it be ready? If you can get a sound clip or a video clip of what your exhaust sounds like that would be excellent. As far as the full system goes, would you be able to provide a high flow cat as well, so that when I purchase it I can bolt everything right on or does it all come in one piece (header-cat-exhaust)?

This is a Euro ITR, with a CompTech CAI, my ITR header, 2-1/2" Carsound Cat, 22" resonator and a 12636 muffler.

anything will sound ricey without a resonator and with a dinky muffler, but with a resonator and decent non canister muffler you'll have good sound good flow and save damn good money over the restrictive mugen. now if your overall goals are a slight improvement and your planing to stop after I/H/E then maybe the mugen is your choice, I would just would never get the mugen for myself so I can't recommend the mugen to anyone else
