Default Just bought my second R!

Horrible camera phone pic.

Last March I sold my 97 to fund my S2000. I haven't been able to do any Solo 1 with the S2000 because of the lack of proper rollover protection so I built a cheap Civic to pull to the track with my 4Runner. But after thinking about it I decided to sell the Civic, 4Runner and trailer and get another Type R.

Unfortunately I wasn't informed about it's engine issues. Ugh. There's the black crap on the bumper, which I understand is normal... just not to the extent I get it. It's really bad. I checked the compression, and it's 180-200-230-150.

I need to do a bit more diagnosis before replacing, but I'm figuring it's the bottom end. I bought the car from a mechanic, and I assume if it was anything easy to fix he would have done it instead of or before selling it. At least now I know why the price was so good.

It could be worse. I'm either going to try and source a brand new short block, throw a built GSR bottom end I found, or thrown in a B20 until I rebuild the block myself. The last option sounds like it could be a lot of fun, although I'm not going to be saving much over buying brand new. Ehhh.

Did you buy it from Teayota Supra? I remember she (?) had a yellow one with 'motor problems' and she got sick of it...

Have you tried a cylinder leakage test?

Hear noise at the valve cover/oil cap its rings.
Noise at the intake its intake valves.
Noise at the exhaust is exhaust valves.

Try that and see where it goes...

Once you go R, you will never wander off far. That or you will never be happy with another car.

It's nice owning 2 R's isn't it? Acutally I'm looking to sell one of mine but having 2 for a short period of time is great. Now if only one of them was FBP or NBP.

It's awesome having another R, especially when it's so nice and clean. I tried doing a leakdown test, but I'm not sure if I was doing it correctly. Instead of hearing the air coming out from the intake, exhaust, or oil cap I was hearing it out of the spark plug on the opposite side. Hrm. I thought I was at TDC. I think before I buy another block I'll have a professional look at it.

I'm leaning toward the GSR block now. Even if the block is fine (I doubt it), it would make a nice place to start an engine build from.

I paid 18k CDN, which is just over 15 US. I probably would have bargained harder if I knew about the problem, but what can you do?

I'm very happy to have the car though, and once that's fixed I'll have ended up getting a pretty good deal on an absolute sweet car! Phoenix yellow is a very rare colour here, so it's definitely nice for the change.
