Trans is out.. how do I tell if the mainshaft bearing is bad or not ?
I got the trans out and the new clutch and flywheel sitting there waiting to go in but I need to find out if my mainshaft bearing is bad or not. I had a slight whine in the tranny when accelerating and it had a lot of chatter in it while decelerating but as soon as I give it some gas or push the clutch in the noise would go away. I was told it was the mainshaft bearing so I got a new one and before I go in and tear it apart I would like to know if there is a possible way to tell it's bad or not.
Nope I mean the input shaft bearing(mainshaft bearing).. That article was good about replacing it but I need to know if there is a way to test it before ripping it all apart..

Is there any play when you try and move it? Ive heard there shouldnt be any, but bump anyways.
The mainshaft and input shaft bearings are two different pieces. Check the ball bearings on them for chips. You can also spin it with your fingers and listen for a whine. I replaced both of those bearings a while back. Whine went away.
Per the Honda dealer the input and mainshaft bearings are the same thing.. There is no play in it when I wiggle it but I hear a slight whine but the could be because there is no oil in it ..

The best way is to pull the trans apart. But honestly for the $33-36 doller price tag of a new bearing why even risk it? I would just replace it, to me it sounds like you may have a bearing noise. Other then what I sagested I dont really know how to do it with the trans all toghter not on the car.
If you need help replacing the bearing Im me its pretty simple and can be done in an hr or so.

Well I pulled the case apart and checked all the bearings. The only one that I could find that had any play in it is the angular bearing on the end of the mainshaft. I put everything back together and the noise still exists.
Basically when I let of the gas while driving I hear a loud chatter and it goes away if I give it a little gas or I push the clutch in.. I am at my wits end now..
I tried adjusting the clutch pedal back in the day and it took me a long time to get it back to as close as original and I am wondering if this could be causing my problem or not.. maybe the clutch is out of adjustment.
Oh well it's got a new Exedy Organic and ACT flywheel now.. so atleast it was worth pulling it all apart.

You should have replaced the bearings anyways. Could be that if they are underload they will make the noise, but only then. If I ever have to do this im gonna have Nocturnaldragon help me
