Default Civic Wont Go INto gear!

My girl friend called me at work today and said that her car was driving fine and all of the sudden she is unable to shift into any of gears when the car is started. When the car is off she can shift into all the gears but if she tries to start the car when it is running and in gear it stalls out. Any ideas what I could check for?

Clutch.

If it can be shifted when the car is off, but not when it's on, it's the clutch.

It's the clutch.

DON'T FORGET THE HYDRO OR CABLE SYSTEM!! you could have a broken clutch cable or a master/slave cylinder that is not pumping anything. Open the hood, look at the clutch fork. step on the clutch and see if it moves. If not, start checking the things i mentioned. MAKE SURE THERE IS FLUID IN THE RESEVOIR IF IT IS HYDRO!!

check for fluid behind the clutch pedal running down to the floor board. if there is fluid there, you need to replace the slave cylinder.

Wouldn't it be the clutch master cylinder if it was running down the pedal?

They could be right, but don't just run out and change the clutch. Check into the simpler and cheaper things first. Check your clutch fluid level and look for any possible leaks. Have your girlfriend press the clutch pedal while you watch the slave cylinder and make sure it's pushing the fork all the way. If all these things check out okay, then i'd say look into changing the clutch.

Just changed my clutch master cyl. Thats where I would start dont just assume she got out went to work and the clutch went out . check the hose from the slave to hard line above tranny for cracks, fluid in res. , check floorboard above gas pedal for fluid leaking, sometimes the slave will go so pull the dust boot off where it bolts to the tranny see if there is sign's of fluid loss in the boot.
