Default Clutch Problems

One day my car was having problems shifting gears, if you push the clutch all the way in it would shift like the pedal wasn pushed in far enough. i parked it for a couple hours then went to start it and it was extremely hard to get it into gear. I had to slam it into reverse but it went, and i made it home. I parked it overnight and the next day when i wanted to go to work it wouldnt go into gear at all, it would just grind. And the clutch pedal was at the floor, like it didnt have anything to make it come back when you press it in. I was thinking it was the clutch so I have everything taken off, but i didnt even think to check the hydraulic fluid. I now know from looking right at the clutch that that is not what it is. Anyone know what this is? Does it sound like what would happen if you were low on fluid?

Could be low on fluid not very likely because you would have had more warning signs but it's possible it's your hydraulic pump if you have one. If that's the problem you should still be able to shift with your car off. Just put it in 1st then start the car but remember your carr will take off. Then you'll have to shift at peak (the point where you clutch naturally disengages) then ease it back into the next gear. you'll have to kill the engine every time you stop. And just so you know i'm not reccommending this it's just an alternative until you get it fixed. Driving without using you clutch isn't hard if you do it right. Good luck

yeah i can shift when the car is off, and it does take off when you have it in first But is there anything else it could be besides that pump???

the more i think about it the more it seems like the master cylinder. How could i find out? When I press on the end of that hydraulic line and pump the clutch pedal it moves, so it seems like it works but maybe not enough.and i dont even think there is a pump for it. i can take picks of everything

if that little ball taht pushes the shift fork is out all the way, should i still be abble to see fluid in the resevoir? cause the resevoir is definatly empty now, but i didnt know if that is because the slave cylinder is disconnected

One way to check the master cylinder is to check on the inside of the firewall where the clutch pedal goes through and see if it is moist. Mine had grease and i replaced it, if the resevoir is empty add fluid and bleed the system through the slave cylinder. If its leaking from the slave cylinder you should be able to see it.

its not leaking from the slave cylinder, but there is definatly a little grease coming out of where that rod goes into the master cylinder.

That is one problem, master cylinders are not that expensive, i got one off ebay haven't been able to test it yet though... i'll pm you when i get a chance.

I have a similar problem... When the car is off, it will go in any gear easily.
When i start it, i have to force it to go in 1st. Once in gear, it takes off just like it should.
No slipping, nothing out of the ordinary... The pedal feels ok, just like it did before this problem. It just started doing this last night, so i haven't gotten a chance to look at it yet. I'll probably have to wait til saturday

it think that is the exact same thing that happened to mine, i was really hard to get into first gear

If your master cylinder is leaking, then thats most likely your problem. Get it changed out before you get stranded with a clutch pedal with zero pressure.

Good thread, im begining to feel this affect... But now it is possibly solved, im getting myself a Master Cylinder.
