Loud clicking in vtec after valve adjustment
I have never heard this sound (at least not loud enough to hear over the engine...) until after I did my valve adjustment (the valves where pretty loose). Now it clicks very loud when I hit vtec and even while in vtec. It's been doing it for about 2 months (not a daily driver but probably put on 700 miles like this). It's not a constant thing though. It will usually do it when it first engages and then sometimes while in vtec. But it's no everytime...
I've recently done a compression test and it was 210, 210, 215, 215 (10:1 compression) so the engine appears fine (pulls hard still too). Just changed the oil 2 days ago and it's still doing it (so it's not low oil pressure)
Doesn't feel like vtec is disengaging while it's clicking but the clicks are very quick when they happen (back to back repeatedly) over and over again so it's hard to tell exactly.
Any ideas??? Mods are listed in the sig...
I do plan on pulling the VTEC Solenoid this weekend. Maybe it's clogged (haven't check it since I've owned it...a year).
Does the solenoid need a gasket though?

Hmm....I was going to suggest that since it's getting colder that maybe your oil is just taking a bit longer to warm up and flow as freely as summertime, but I see you're in GA so that shouldn't play into it.
I don't have much experience with non-OEM valves/camshafts so not sure what issues those would create, like maybe the tolerance range would be different than the OEM measurements?
Maybe you got a littled carried away with the valve adustment since they were loose? Might be you're riding kinda tight on the specs....

I think I'm going to check the valve lash this weekend too. That and the solenoid filter.
It's just weird as it starting doing it right after the valve lash job (when it was warmer though it's in the 60's so it's not like it's freezing here!).
I just hope it's not the pump and that I'm not hitting piston to valves. I would think that it is not the clearance as it does it only on occasion. I'd think it would do it all the time!
Thanks for the help. Any have any other pointers to look for too?

It really doesn't sound related to the RPMs at all

OK, it appears to be coming from the head. I did a valve lash check (all where ok except 1 was just a little bit on the loose side) and I checked the screen on the VTEC solenoid (it was fine too).
So then I revved the engine right there and heard it from the head (I have a VAFC so I don't have to me moving).
Someone on another site mentioned about VTEC pistons in the head...something about them locking the low cam in with the high cam when VTEC kicks in. Might this be it?
It mainly happens w/in the first 10-15 minutes (especially when it's cold but it does it when it's warm occasionally too).
It does it while accelerating as well as when I let off or just maintain...
