Chicago: What tires to get for Winter?
I was thinking about getting some all season or just winter tires. What do you guys think?
Also if you could recommend some tires and sizing that would be awesome, seems like everyone is all over the place with sizes and to have matching front and rear sizes or still staggered like the stock set up.
Thanks,
Den

All seasons are a joke, particularly on a car like the S2000. I bought Dunlop Winter Sport M3 for my 2005, which were almost the only high-performance snows that come in the S2K configuration. This will be my first winter with the car (Connecticut) so how well they work remains to be seen. But I would never buy all seasons in a place that gets more than a few inches of snow every year. Then again, I bought snows for my wife's RAV4 and some people might think that's unnecessary.

on the contrary of what many believe, so cal does see semi-cold weather. we have daytime temps dropping down to the mid to high 50's and at night, it has dropped down to 38-40 degrees. it was like this for a while last winter.

I've driven my S through 4 Chicago winters on cheap Firestone LeMans HR's. Prior to the LeMans tires, I had brand new Blizzak LM22's. They were on the car for 2 weeks. They sucked **** in normal Chicago winters. Our plow and salt system is unmatched through the U.S., so you'll practically never be driving on snow and/or ice when you are driving.
The all-seasons were great on cold roads, salted roads, slushy roads, and even got me through some winter snow storms. They weren't great on ice, or standing sleet. However, when the weather gets as bad as it does during heavy snow storms, I don't let the wife go out in her AWD car....
The $250 HR's outclassed the $900 set of LM's specifically for Chicago winters, and for multiple years (oh yeah, the guy I sold the LM's to, wore through them in about a winter and a half of driving). My HR's are still looking new, even after driving almost triple the amount of miles on them than the other guy on the LM's. In fact, they are now on my Integra serving as DD's. How's that for $$$ well spent?

That's why I have beanies, hoodie sweats, and gloves. Full set in the trunk at all times. But no spare tire.

Haven't driven it in the snow yet, but I'm not too worried about it. With high performance snows and the S2000's 50/50 weight distribution I think it'll be OK. Wasn't so long ago that everyone had rear-wheel drive and we all did just fine in the winter. Of course, back then there was no such thing as these idiotic "all season" tires. Idiotic for the half of the country that it snows in, anyway.
