Car dies on highway
Ok I filled my car up and drove it to my friends house 2 km away. I parked it over night at their house. I started it up the next afternoon drove about 3 more km's and then the car died while I was driving at about 100km\h. It just cut right off.
I'm not to sure what caused the car to die. I checked for spark. I can hear the fuel pump prime up when the ignition it turned on. I can see the fuel pressure rise on the gauge in the engine compartment.
I checked all my fuses. I checked the plug's they look wet when I pull them after trying to start it.
How do you know if you have bad gas? Anybody have any idea's?

The battery I would think is fine if it has enough power to roll the engine over with ease. Also my volts gauge read 12V in the car. And if the distrubitor was the problem, I thought I wouldn't get spark. I rolled the engine over with the plugs out of the engine grounding them to the car. I could see a spark.
Any other idea's?

does the car crank? if so you said you check for spark was there spark? if not check the ignition coil or ignitor.
if it doesent crank its most likly the ignition switch.

I said ignition timimg nothing about having spark and just cause your motor is turning does not mean the batterry is strong enough to start the car. Also it could be your alternator. But your description is minimal.
Ok, I opened up my distrubutor and there was oil baked onto the inside and outside of the cover over the coil. I mean the cover that you can't get out unless you take the rotor out.
The rotor also seems to have points where it's stickin a bit when you turn it. I can't remember what a good one feels like anymore. I though it was should have seemed really smooth. But mine seems to bind just slightly.
I also did a compression test on the car and all the hole's came out to 30 or 40 psi.
I have a hard time believing that all my rings went at the same time.
The battery is fine I even started it after a hooked it up to the charger and got the same results.
What should I be looking for if it's my ignition timing?.

Make sure your dist is in working order plus buy new plgs rotor and cap you'll need the new box in the dist too. Then You will have to adjust your timing. Your compression should come back I had the same problem. Check your timing belt see if its loose.

if it was his alternator then his battery wouldn't be reading 12V.
Did you say your spark Plugs were wet?

what engine?
more than likely your t-belt took a ****, check TDC...if its off then your t-belt took
a ****, if it's with TDC then you must have dropped a valve...pull your valve cover
and take a look at the timing, and make sure the t-belt is turning the crank in
conjunction with the cam gear/s...

if you dropped a valve or something like that you would more than likely have a smashed up spark plug and/or if you can take out the plugs you can stick a pen magnet down the spark plug holes and you should be able to pick up debris or chunks of valves in there.

yup,
But more than likely the t-belt has broken teeth from not being replaced after 90K miles

So I pulled the valve cover off tonight and noticed that the timing marks on the pulleys were off about 10 or 12 teeth. I checked the timing belt to see if any of the teeth were missing and none were.
How would my timing get messed up like that? I checked the belt and it was tight.
Could my distrubutor cause some kind of a jam. There was a strange film inside of it. kind of like tar. I figure it's oil that's been heated really hot.
Anyway thanks for the help guys.

Huh..... wow...does the distributor spin freely when removed? have you ever changed your t-belt before..?
let us know the culprit

I've changed my timing belt at least 10 times for various reason's. The distrubitor moves freely enough that I can't see it binding.
I don't have the cover over my timing belt is it possiable that something flew in there and distrubed the belt long enough for it to jump 10 teeth.
I really can't think of anything else that could cause this to happen. I'm going to set the timing again on saturday and try to start it again. I'll let you know how it works out.

Well, I reset the timing and I swaped the chip I had in my ECU for another. The car seems to be running fine.
I still can't explain why the timing belt slipped, and I'm pretty sure the tar in the distrubitor "burnt oil" is not a good thing.
If anyone has any idea's let me know.
But all in all I'm happy to be back on the road. Bonus it didn't costing me a cent. Thanks, Honda tech members
