Default Type R 225 Hoosiers for autocross

I am going to auto-x in stock class again this year and was thinking about running 225 front (with 5mm spacers)/ 205 rear Hoosier AS303s on an extra set of stock ITR rims. Tire Rack guy tells me the Hoosier literature says the tires will separate away from anything less than a 7 1/2" rim. Anybody using this Hoosier set-up on stock ITR rims?

Thanks, whh3 00 Type R #108

All the National competitive Rs ran the 225/205 combo. It will work ok.

I run a 225-205(F-R)/50/15 combo with 5 mm H&R spacers up front with no problems yet. However, I'm running the V700's. Would the hoosiers be different in that regard?

The Hoosiers are a little bit wider, but it is NOT an issue. I ran my ITR for two years, one on 225/205 Kumhos, one on 225/205 Hoosiers. It is NOT a problem. They're difficult to mount, but will be perfectly fine. Try ~51psi F and 47psi R with Hoosiers (10psi less on each end for Kumhos)

The only difference is the Hoosiers are 225/45/15. So they are slightly shorter in diameter.

Hey, glad you made it to the board! Odd that they tirerack guy should tell you that...sounds like people are doing it no problem. Maybe shoot hoosier an email mentioning what the tirerack guy said, so they can yell at him. Hope to see you soon at AutoX!

I run 225/45/15 Hoosiers in the front with a 5mm spacer. Other than being difficult to mount they fit fine. I have not had ANY problems related to a small wheel width with these tires. If you don't believe Fauth (he came in 1st at Nationals 2 years in a row!!) then call up Hoosier Tom at MidAtlantic Motorsports 219-243-5553. http://www.midatlanticmotorsport.com He specializes in Auto-x tires wheels etc. and has for the last 15+ years. He has no problem recommending them for a Type R and will mount them for free. His prices are the same as Tire Rack. Both he and Tire Rack support the sport so please buy from one of them.

Regards,
Alan

Guys...... Mind if I jump in here?

I'm a road racer and ex-Autocrosser and never really considered running two different size tires front to rear.

I think I know why some do it, .........but would like to know more. How much really does it help? Has someone actualy done tests with 4- 225's vs 2-225 and 2-205's? Is there a rear clearance issue I dont know about?

I run a 225/50/13 Hoosier on a 13x7 wheel. On all 4 corners. This gives me the rotation option from front to rear. With the cost of tires $$$$$$ I think they last longer this way. Figure 150 x 4= 600.00 plus shipping, heat cycling, then mounting and balancing. Maybe 750.00 for a set of race rubber.

And....... what if you flat spot a front tire? You can not move it to the back.

Thanks......

John

Here's the deal. A) you can put 225/45/15 Hoosiers or 225/50/15 Kumhos on the stock Type R wheel. I know because I've done it. B) on the Type R you only need spacers on the rear (H&R 5mm) (but you need to go ahead and change to longer wheel studs). C) the reason for the different size tire in front vs rear is for rotation on concrete surfaces. most of the Type R autocrossers that used this combo used 225's all the way around on asphalt and 225 front, 205 rear on concrete. And yep, these guys were faster, or at least fast enough to win. if you had 225's all the way around on concrete, everything sticks like glue and the rear end will not rotate. And nope, I've never heard of anyone using a different combo in road racing.

The Hoosiers....... Try ~51psi F and 47psi R with Hoosiers

WOW! are those cold pressures? i usually run 34-36 cold in the front, 36-40 cold in the back on my staggered a3so3 combo.

Yeah, WOW!!! I forgot to link this one for ya Rod. I guess we should just post PICS of our cars in action this Sunday with 'em on so they become believers, oh and post the pressures we run. But, for God's sake the sidewalls on the H's are soo friggen stiff I can't imagine sliding all over the place with that much air in 'em. Of course I'm just a Newbie...

At least I think we should run the lower pressures since our gearing tends to promote traction issues. I'll just have to get used to them. I know You already are, and you are running the stagger that they are speaking of. My 225/45 all the way around needs the higher pressure in the rear for easier rotation...

It works best with those pressures cold to start but I bleed back down to those pressures between runs. So its both a hot and a cold pressure.

Same for me...I bleed them down between runs...they eventually will stabilize at that pressure.

As far as how high they are: if you're running a lower pressure, try running the higher pressure some time and see if you like it. Note, though, that these are pressures for the 225/205 combo on 6" rims...you likely would not need as much pressure on a wider rim.

I run the 225/205 Hoosiers (I just switched from a 225/205 V700 setup and before that a 205/205 V700 setup).

I'm wondering if the 225/205 Hoosiers on stocks with a 5mm spacer in front will rub on a 92 cx with itr suspension?
