Help with a painting question pleeeze. (tail lamps)
I saw this in the CRX section.
I really liked the way he painted the taillamps. Does anybody here know the best way to do that? I was thinking that you could tape off the entire taillamp and use a knife to cut away the area you want painted, but then you would have to use a knife on your lamps. (Scratches) Any ideas. BTW, dont flame this post, I don't care if you think its stupid.
THANKS GUYS!

Actually, I dislike haters as well, but I also dislike when people post something worthless when I am asking for help. If you can help me, then post...if not then shut the hell up.
Also, good job using the word rice. I haven't heard that word being used enough around here lately.
Anywayz, if anybody can HELP me with this question, please post your replies. Thanks!

its prolly got somekind of film or transparent frame.. he might have painted (orange) over blackouts.. just experiment and see
Looks to me like he bought the black out covers made by GTS or whatever and had them installed. Then taped off where he didnt want them painted and had them go wild at the paint shop. You get home, remove the masking tape and you got yourself nice painted smoked taillights.
Just my idea...

I say take your car to a body shop have them tint the tails(clear caot with a little black mixed in works really good) and the after that drys have them mask off the rest and color match it to your car. That easy. Hope this helps.
They look like maybe smoked tail lights with some kind of bezel or cover around it. If I was you I would just look for some smoked tail lights and a cover and color match the cover to cars color!

I agree with HybridEX they are GTS smoked tailight covers. Just buy some and tape of the area and cut it with a razor blade to the size that you want and paint the rest. It shouldnt be anything too complicated as long as you take your time. Good Luck
I have to agree with E30 325es. It looks like there is something on top of the lights. It could possible be a custom job with custom made taillight. Hell, i don't know. I suggest you do what is stated earlier. Tint the tails with a clearcoat/black basecoat mix. Then tape off the section you don't want painted and color match to your car. Sounds like the best way to get the best results. Just my opinion though. later.
I painted my taillights (red), but I think the it would work with anything. First mask the outside of the light with regular masking tape. I would use the all clear lights if you can get them. Use either a semi-transparent paint or try to find the paint that is specifically used for lights (can't remember what it is called). Do very light coats. When the desired darkness is achieved, let dry for a couple of days! Then mask the inside of the lights. This is much harder, but you can do it if you take your time. It took me almost an hour a light to get the right angles and everything. Then mask any of the light you don't want painted ( I used 3M fresh paint masking tape as to not mess up the paint). You may want to scuff the light a bit to give the paint more grab, and then paint.
Good luck!

PS I don't think it is rice. Rice is usually used by people who only buy mods instead of doing something original.
