Starter Going Out?
Sup guys, i think my starter is goin out and i was wondering if an H23 starter would fit on an F22? As of right now im roll starting..and is roll starting harsh on a car? Thanks jon...
I'm having the same problems with my starter.
I just doesn't attempt to start the car. My dad went out and did the old tap trick on the starter to get it going. I've had to roll start a couple times. But taping and yes I do mean physically getting out the car with a wrench or hammer and tapping it. I mean barely also. I really don't see what it's doing but it works every time.
I'm about to replace it unless someone can tell me what else it could be.

From what I've read the trannys and blocks bolt up on H and F series. If that's true can't imagine why a starter wouldn't be interchangeable.
And why second gear? As long as you push in the clutch and don't force it into gear it is absolutely no different than downshifting! Putting it in first gear will make the engine spin at a higher RPM which is what you want. Just make sure you turn the key all the way, it sucks when you end up at the bottom of a hill with oncoming traffic!!!

Check your fuses too, you should hear a clicking noise from inside the starter. Indicates the syllenoid is frozen. On honda's the syllenoid is built onto the starter so you'd replace the whole unit.
Starter (at least on my manual) is really easy to replace. Take it off and hook up jumper cables to it (make sure you brace it with your foot or it'll chase after you!), ground is on the body and positive is the little bolt sticking out. If it spins (and gear must kick out) if it doesn't its froze up.

2nd gear has more mechanical advantage over the engine. In first gear the engine has the upper hand. 2nd gear has none of the tire screach or hard jolting that you experience in 1st and you can turn the engine over from a slower ground speed. You are less likely to end up at the bottom of the hill not running. Just try it and see if I'm wrong.

Or maybe there's crud in the starter solenoid (the smaller can) so it doesn't make good contact. Either way, you can dismantle the starter & replace individual parts, or get a new/rebuilt starter. Most people replace the starter.
