Out of ideas (VTEC and VSS CELs)
Okay, so a few months ago I swapped out my old GSR motor for a fresh B16A2 swap and since then I havent gotten VTEC to work once. Right now I have codes 17 and 21, VSS and VTEC solenoid.
I have replaced the VSS three times and the VTEC solenoid twice, both with known working parts. Same codes.
HOWEVER - my speedometer didnt work before I swapped out the VSS, now it does work, but same code. I've tripple checked all the wiring. Oil level is optimal.
CEL for Solenoid comes on when I get into VTEC rpms and clears every time I recycle the ignition. The VSS CEL comes on only when I drive for a long time on the highway. I've asked all my friends, they have no idea what could be wrong. I even took it to my honda mechanic, he spent two weeks with it, he has no idea.
I'm completly out of ideas.. I've searched the hell out of the archives and found nothing useful. Anyone have any fresh ideas? TIA

bump.. VSS seems to stop functioning when it rains out, but all the seals and everything have been checked five times over.. does this point to the wiring being the issue?
But if it was a wiring issue wouldnt the CEL be on all the time and not when I hit vtec rpms? BTW my VSS CEL only comes up when I check the codes, doesnt actually come up very often when I'm driving but it has once or twice.

Wiring issues don't have to be obvious or easy to find. Your problem sounds like either a flakey ground problem or some intermittent connection between the sensors and the ECU.
replace the main ground wires first, then run the sensor wires directly to the ECU one by one. You will find the problem eventually.
