Default Yokohama A038R? Alternative r-compounds for the OTC

I know this r-compound isn't available in North America, so I'm assuming it's not DOT approved. Anyone know for sure whether it's DOT approved or not? What about tread wear rating? Anyone have any experience with these things? I'm looking for an alternative to A032R's which are shaping up to be the spec tire at the Open Track Challenge (www.opentrackchallenge.com) in the Touring classes. Basically anything that's DOT approved and has a 60 treadwear rating or higher is legal in Touring class. I'm not a big fan of the A032R's because of the soft sidewalls, but maybe it's the best tire available given these limitations. Any alternative tires come to mind?

TIA,
Dave

Not sure what size you are running but Pirelli P Zero Competizione. Not sure where to get them but I've heard that they are pretty good. Other than that Michelin or A032R.

Are you guys running a hybrid civic?

Since you're coming from Canuckville, I suppose those A038R would be OK as long as the treadwear # is 60 or greater and its CDOT (or equivalent) approved. Got a pic of those you can post? Ed

Read the rulebook. Are they DOT approved? Are they available to all competitors? Available in x widths and y diameters?

Contact A&J Racing in Vancouver

They can order the A038R in 3 different compounds I believe.

Great, I'll give A&J a call tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

I heard back from customer service at Demon Tweeks (UK aftermarket parts shop) and the A038R are apparently DOT approved and a 60 treadwear rating. This should, I believe, make them legal for the OTC. The rule on the matter for the OTC states "Entered vehicles will run on DOT-approved tires with a minimum 2/32 of an inch tread depth and a UTQG treadwear rating of 60 or higher". Sounds to me like the A038R qualify, but I will pass it by the event organizers to be sure. If you want to see a picture of these tires, go to http://www.demon-tweeks.com and check the 'special offers' section and then the 'competition tyres' link down at the bottom of the page.

We will be competing in a Civic hybrid in Touring 4. Check out our team profile at http://www.opentrackchallenge.com/profiles/team50.htm and for all my fellow Canadian brethren out there check out http://www.standonguard.com if you haven't already

Thanks for the help guys, it's appreciated!

Dave

Thanks Zygspeed, we appreciate it! Aren't you co-driving at the OTC with SpeedPak? I noticed the thread on the OTC messageboard with you guys talking about registering. Or did that fall through? Would be great fun to have a fellow H-T.com team there to talk hybrid shop with

Cheers,
Dave

Short version of a long story:
Yes, had initially planned to run the OTC in a car quite similar to yours.
However, in the mean time Speedpak has been out of the country, decided to get married and hasn't built the RACE CAR !
A couple weeks ago (before Fais got back to town), I contacted Brian about the "status" of the "Speedpak" entry, and suggested that I'd enter my ITR if things came together in time, ... under the "Zygspeed" team name....(to be continued)!

Hope to see Zygspeed Racing at the OTC then! We've got an ITR as our back-up car too, just in case we blow up the hybrid in spring testing before the OTC. Both ar T4 cars anyway, so we'll have a blast at the event in either car. Hopefully the hybrid will be strong (just had an engine rebuild) and we can leave the ITR at home...or maybe we'll use it as our tow vehicle!

Cheers,
Dave

Actually, some of the A038 have DOT on them. There might be chances that the new A048 have DOT cuz ppl are running them in Europe now.

AJ PwR, thanks for the info. I actually called A&J Racing yesterday (not sure who I spoke to, but he was very helpful and friendly...actually offered to call me back with more info on A048R pricing) and he said that the A038R's are out of production so he can't get me any. However, he did say he could probably get me some A048R's from Japan but they'd be expensive and he didn't think they'd be DOT approved and maybe not 60 treadwear rating as well.

If you learn any more about these tires, please drop me an e-mail at dpratte4@cogeco.ca I'd really appreciate any help you can offer in terms of tracking down some A038R's that are DOT approved or finding out if the A048R's are DOT approved.

Thanks again,
Dave

Thanks for the good wishes Maxi, and hope to see you there ... too.
I spoke to Speedpak last night and it looks like I'll need to install at least a roll bar in my R if we're going to get serious about winningthis.

Hmm... rollbar or cage, rollbar or cage... Ed

P.S. Just sent Brian an e-mail requesting one of those last "Invitations".

Take care, ... and see you in a couple months. Ed

yeah, last thing in the world I'd want to be wearing in a rollover is a harness without a rollbar or cage. Harness bars are evil, as far as I can tell A friend of mine rolled his Integra a few years ago (no cage or rollbar in the car) and he'd almost certainly be dead if he was wearing a harness that held him in a upright position. As it was, he was able to duck out of the way because he was using the stock 3-point belt. He got away with a scratched up helmet and a trashed car, but he lived to build a CRX hybrid so there is a happy ending

Seems like the A038R's may be a moot point since I can't find a shop that has any in stock. If you guys stumble across any, let me know!

Tire Rack shows that the Yoko A032R's are in stock. Check out their website at: http://www.tirerack.com

BTW, I second that "Harness Bars with no Roll Cage is suicidal in a rollover."

Ok, Ok, ... enough with the no-rollbar thing.
Though it's not required by the rules. of this event.

I'd exchanged a few e-mails w/Brian yesterday, ... Speedpak and I will be "Officially" in the event within about a week.
More news and details once I clear my desk at work (by April). Ed
