Default how to ID tranny pieces

Hi, I've found a local guy selling a crx Si tranny that he says has a quaife and 4.7FD in it. Is there any checking that I can do without opening the case, to confirm that there is in fact an LSD in this thing?
Also, I know there's a trick to counting the number of turns on the axle when turning the input shaft, for checking the FD, so anyone who can provide some info on that would also be greatly appreciated!

Well, the easy way to see if it has an LSD in it is to look through the axel holes. If you don't see anything, then it has an LSD. You wont be able to tell what kind unless you open it up. This works for the Quaife type LSD.

Cant you count the teeth on the ring gear and countershaft and get the ratio?

so if I can't see through the axle hole, there's an LSD in there?

.RJ - yeah, I'm hoping for a method to check without opening the case

follow the method below. put it in 1st, count turns. the Si is 4.25, DX is 3.88, so a 4.7 FD should be at least in the SW quadrant, probably around the 8o clock position. at least if its exactly where the DX or Si or HF positions are, then its NOT 4.7.

If you CAN see through the hole, the it HAS LSD. At least it has a unit like a quaife. Not sure who else makes one like the quaife for the L3 tranny.
If you see a kind of bar in the hole, then it does not have a quaife LSD.

love the MS Paint illustration, tyson!

now one more thing... to get into first gear without it in a car, I click the gear selector nub into the center (neutral), then rotate it counter clockwise, and forward?

thanks for the other tips guys! I'll look at some open diff trannies I have lying around to see what NOT to look for

Yep, I know. That is why I said it would not have a quaife!

Thanks for posting that pic RJ!

If you see that bar in there, then it is either a stock diff, or an OPM/Phantom, other type of diff!

not quite, you have to think about how the shift linkage works.

stick a screwdriver in the hole in the gear selector, from neutral, rotate left (ccw) and pull OUT, away from the tranny.

use a rag and vice grip to rotate the input shaft.
