So i have a 97' civic ex coupe and the axles are bad well the cv boot mainly i could just replace it with the cv boot repair kit but i will rather get the axle..


the thing is everytime i either go right or left they click and thump nasty so i now know that it is both...can anyone back me up on this??

in case if its both and i only have money for 1 at this time should i buy the driver or passanger if they both sound the same??? i was thinking driver?

I'd replace the one that clicks/thrumps worse than the other first, because it's probably in worse shape.

Having said that you'll still need the other one too if you don't like the clicking/thumping.

On the bright side I've maybe seen only a few axles ever actually break at the outer joint after they've been clicking. Hell the ones that broke were driven on literally for years and had been clicking even when going straight!

I've personally broken a good amount of axles, but mine always broke at the inner joint and the outers were still cherry. Inner break due to forces on them from drag racing or just driving hard with a really crazxy clutch set-up.

 

well there isnt a way i turn less than the other so i know i think i will be doing the driver side...first since i think that has been doing it longer...but yeah

i am doing it on my girls car
when i had my si i would snap axles left and right since i had no lsd and the my clutch was heavy duty so when i dumped it it would break at the line

i was thinking of that too but since its the only mode of transportation i didnt want one to break within those two weeks while i get paid...

Main difference with the EX is if it's a 5-speed you will have to drain the trans to do the left axle because it doesn't have the jackshaft like the B-Series Si did.

Some people just jack whichever side they're working on really high in hopes that the fluid won't spill out of the diff while they remove the inner joint from the differential.

If spillage is a concern I'd drain the tranny.

If it's an automatic then you don't even have to drain them ***** y0!

u dont need to drain **** out...only a couple cups come out anyways...not much so you dont need to worry about tranny fluid flooding out.

Well for autos you don't ever have to drain it, but with 5-speeds you never know for sure how much will come out.

See the fill hole is about level with the diff, so in theory there should be minimal leaking if the correct amount of fluid is in the tranny, but what i've found more often than not is that people's trannies are overfilled, so a lot more than a cupful spills out, causing a bigger mess than you'd want to clean off of your driveway/carport.

Have you actually spilled oil or tranny fluid on your driveway before? Oil dry won't soak every bit of it up - it requires concrete cleaner and high pressure to get the stains out. I work at a shop - oil dry isn't what it's advertised as.

The point being that for a seriously minimal amount of work (draining the tranny or at least jacking one side at a time really high and using a drain pan under the diff hole where the inner joint sticks in) you can save yourself the hassle of trying to clean the floor from a spill.

Pfft, throw down some newspaper and a bucket to catch some if a lot spills and go for it.
